Talles Magno [Forward]

DP is a roster designation not a type of contract. We could simply use our allocation dollars to buy him down. He's only on a 950k contract iirc

At this point, this is all just fan fiction—Magno is not coming back. As I’ve mentioned before, all signs indicate he’s happy in Brazil and didn’t enjoy MLS’s style of play, making a return highly unlikely.

From the club’s perspective, bringing him back doesn’t make much sense. He spent three years in MLS losing value, and there was concern that the club wouldn’t even recoup what they originally paid for him. Since moving to Brazil, however, he’s been performing well and steadily increasing in value. Right now, they have the opportunity to sell him for a solid fee based on his production in Brazil.

So, looking at this purely from an asset management standpoint—why would CFG take the risk of bringing him back to a league where he already struggled? Strip away the NYCFC fandom and ask: What’s the actual upside?

I agree with you, but Talles and Jovan both have loans expiring in June. If we don't have another place to quickly sell or loan them, where do they go? There is a scenario in which they come back for a few months while we find their next destination.

Anything is possible, but we did the "his loan is expiring, he might be back" dance with Mitri for over two years and multiple loans, and he never returned. I think it's highly unlikely either of these guys will come back, especially after that athletic article talking about the key to success for CFG being selling players. They aren't risking a loss of value on either of those guys by bringing them back to a league where they struggled.

That's interesting. Wonder if the extension impacted anything. Obviously, I don't think he will be back either but another option is converting to the 3 DP model for half a season since we also have an open u22 spot.

I do think that NYCFC has been very good at managing these loan situations with Mitrita and Thiago Andrade, so doubt we have issues.

Are we allowed to change now that we have passed the compliance date? The way the roster rules are written it sounds like we are locked into our model choice:

MLS rosters will feature six discretionary spending roster spots with the flexibility to choose between two models, tailorable to a team’s roster-building strategy.

Clubs will be required to submit and announce their 2025 roster construction path by the Roster Compliance Date on Feb. 21.

Yeah, for example the Chicago Fire, in the league release, only took half the gam because they are telegraphing that they are going sign a 3rd DP in the summer window so they have nothing to give back.

Teams can switch in the summer window if they haven't used half the GAM allocated for the U-22 model.

Interesting, I didn't know that, thanks for clarifying.

So in theory, once we don't use our GAM or U22 slot in the first window, David Lee could spice things up and switch it over to a DP spot he doesn't fill in the second window, and all it will cost is some of our league-leading GAM pile that we don't spend!

I'd be mildly intrigued to see what Pascal can get out of him.

The guy had a 10/10 season for us as recently as 2022. It got ugly after that and we need a striker which he obviously showed he can't do, but I'd be intrigued to put him on the wing and see what happens.

If you would like to hold onto that optimism, I would recommend not looking at his stats from his last two seasons in Brazil.

No longer on loan. But I hope sold soon.
He'll have to stay and get minutes until the summer window to build value. It didn't go well for him with Corinthians and his first tour with us ended badly.

Agreed. He could easily turn out to be a contributor. (Full disclosure: I love the guy's personality, and he's totally a New Yorker. He just fits.)

I mostly think it’s hilarious that Talles might come back just when we don’t have a striker again.

Well, it wouldn't be an offseason if there wasn't some player that Pascal was going to magically fix. Remember last season when Cushing just didn't give Ojeda and Ferendez a chance, and Pascal was going to unlock them. Maybe Pascal can work some of that same magic he used on Ojeda where none of his stats get any better, but he looks better.
