Union Postmatch

You shouldn't feel like you can't post your opinion on Pirlo. No one has a monopoly on the "board opinion" Ive gotten way more shit for my pirlo posts that you will ever get for your pro pirlo stuff. Just write what you see and dont engage when you get responses unless they are civil. I for one am curious to hear what the pirlo fans see, because i know at this point i have a little bias, just because I have been against him for our team for so long.
That's a really generous post. Thanks.

It's not that I'm worried about the flack, it's more that I feel like I would just be repeating myself for no real gain. I think the best way to make some kind of progress (in the Hegelian sense, not in the advancement of my own perspective) would be to talk it through play by play. Especially since it would be too tedious to go through a replay and make snippets or even reference timestamps. The temporaneous is lost in the summary stats and heat maps that can otherwise be quite useful.

Yeah, completely agree. I'd love to all get together to watch a game because I could point and say, "there, *that's* Pirlo getting back and making a key defensive play." He makes a goal saving defensive play at least once a game and usually a few other good defensive plays as well that simply get ignored in our Pirlo discussions. If we were all in the same room (or same row at the stadium) I could probably do that stand-up-and-point thing 10 times a match when Pirlo makes a key play or pass.

Having the two sides sit here on the board arguing all year does nothing. I just need to be able to jump up and yell "right there you dang nitwits!" where you can all see it, nod, and go, "yeah, I see what you mean, you're totally right, that Pirlo's a genius." :-)

I jump up for both the "great play there from Pirlo" and "come on Andrea, you have to do better". I just see more of the latter this season than last (I was his biggest apologist last year, mind).

We do all need to go to a few matches together, though—we have plenty of time to arrange that.;)

Christopher Jee i will admit to paying extra attention to Pirlo because of my bias now. He's there to help us play out of the back. He was standing still in the middle of the pitch the first 30 minutes as we struggled. Either his legs are shot or he doesn't care.

We played better when Ring and Maxi were our link up players deep. And he stands around on defense. I know that's not his role, but it is part of the game. You could argue that our CBs should get even more credit because they're stuck 3 on 2 sometimes.

100%. And to be honest, I'm also open to being made aware of my own blind spots.

I also wanna point out the one time that Ring got caught on the ball near his own area. And he doesn't even have to do that very often. I would worry about him as the lone CDM. If that had been Pirlo, he would be bleeding dry from a thousand wounds right now.

It would also help to be able to isolate whole passages of play that had their roots in Pirlo's foresight. I saw that he has 16 assists in his 50 if you count the secondary assists. Makes me wonder what we would see if we counted tertiary assists or higher orders of indirect influence.

Completely disagree with this. He's there to be the spark plug in the midfield. The reason we had to work so hard in the first half hour or so was because of their strong and active high press. Pirlo's job is to receive the outlet ball from that or to move up the field in parallel to one of the guys on the wing carrying the ball upfield. His job is to be in the center and run the offense, getting the play started. It's not his job to be in the back line and rescue our defenders from a press.

I'm super down. Especially with the new terraces. The view from Red Hot next to the SS is superb for Pirlo-spotting when NYC are defending that half of the pitch.

Totally agree with this. I wonder if we could all meet in one of the pub partners on a Tuesday evening, say, and rewatch a match on the DVR with a remote nearby so we could rewind and watch a play develop.

Or could we maybe just play a game and trade 30 minute spells as the CDM? ;) I've played a decent amount in this position, particularly as I've gotten older, and I think there is a lot of nuance which gets lost.

Lol, the I know more than you about x argument. Always a favorite.
Heh, I didn't mean it to come off like that but understand how it might. I'm not good enough to try and make that argument but I earnestly think it would be a fun and didactic exercise.

ETA maybe that argument would be fine anyway. Maybe I know more than you about x, but you surely know more than I do about some y and z.

Why don't we just play it out where it really matters? FIFA Ultimate Team. The bane and reason of my existence.

Lol. You will destroy me. Last time I played FIFA I think the controllers had 1/3rd as many buttons. And I was already hopelessly confused.

If you know more, then educate us. Explain the finer points of the position we are missing out on. Dont just say trust me, I know more than you, you plebes will never get it.

Ha. I believe you're mischaracterizing what I said, but that's ok. Maybe I left myself open to it.

I think it would be easier to talk about in person, play-by-play. I think I've said about as much as I can, over a number of posts, about what I think the position entails. PM me if you're down to watch a game over a drink.

To be super clear, I'm not convinced I'm right and I'm not convinced you're wrong, but I am pretty convinced we have achieved as much synthesis as we ever will by talking this over, online, ad nauseum.

If it wasn't for saying the same thing over and over, there wouldn't be a forum

In 2015, it was my second away game when McNamara scored from 25 yards out against the Union (youtube), snapping our 11-game winless streak. But what can I say about Villa's goal last night that hasn't already been said. It was something else. There was a good turnout from the traveling supporters and great energy, too
