USOC - April 14 - Westchester (Away)

All good all around except for the (adult) supporter who tried fighting two kids with the westchester FC flags who ran down the walkway in front of the stand at about the 75th minute.

Yeah, supporter culture protect your flag and your area yada yada but kids. Read the room.

Otherwise a very nice away day, nice that they took care of business in the first half.

Though I was yapping about those lines all night, I really found them delightful. Yonkers, where I grew up, and Mount Vernon are the not-quite-twin step-children of Westchester County, with median incomes for both at least 30% lower than county average. That facility was a wreck for years. It's so nice to see it fixed up, and those lines are representative of the various uses it provides. Also, venues like that are what the USOC is about. Lower league clubs should automatically get home games when playing MLS teams. And it's an abomination that MLS tried to shunt it aside for Leagues Cup.

Finally, the Notable People list in Mount Vernon's Wikipedia entry is very impressive!

One of the people running with the flags was like a 14 year old kid. The fact that some grown man felt the need to confront them and start a physical altercation was an embarrassment. Soccer is supposed to be fun, not a test of your frayed, alcoholic masculinity.

Fully agree with this. Westchester SC struggles with attendance and a game like this hopefully did wonders for their coffers. They earned this game by winning two USOC games. MLS teams should always travel to lower-level teams; not only does it create excellent fun at these smaller stadiums, but it helps these teams immensely.

I can't believe that a NYCFC fan confronted a Westchester fan. It's the same fanbase! Are there really Westchester fans who aren't NYCFC fans? If you need to confront a fan of a team three levels below your team, you really should reevaluate your fandom.

I have sympathy for this view from the standpoint of revenue to the lower tier club. But at the same time for a lot of those players a match like this could be one of the few (only) chances they have to play a match in a larger stadium. I mean, none of the SSSs in the US are like walking out onto the field at Wembley, but it still has to be a pretty cool feeling for one of these clubs to play at RBA or someday at Etihad Field.

(I can't remember what our place is called. Field? Point?)

Mag-10 has been a very interesting and productive experiment. But it’s against a lesser opponent. I wonder what that would look like against an MLS side.
I've always felt that AM is his natural position. He is way too slow for a winger, and not physical enough for a striker. But he is a good, creative passer, and has excellent feet for close control and dribbling in tight spaces. I mean, Zidane was a slow guy.

Etihad Chop Shop.

There were people wearing NYCFC gear and Westchester gear coming into the away supporters section to say hello. There was someone who did the running of the flags along the sections when Westchester scored who was a Third Rail hat.

Pick one team for these matches.

I also think that some of it is attitude. Last night he played with intensity, he was very direct and confident with the ball, and even aggressive defensively. He should have gotten a yellow for a really hard tackle - but for me it showed he was locked in and committed. Of course he was playing against a much weaker team, but he is much better when his head is in it.

My point isn't to pick one team or the other -- I would posit that probably 80% of Westchester fans at least have some connection or fandom with NYCFC. Why are NYCFC fans accosting Westchester fans? You're accosting and antagonizing your own fanbase!
