Walking Away from One Summer Internship After Accepting and Getting Stipend

Yeah that’s probably right. Love that your girls are making headway in what seem to be still heavily male fields. If your younger stays with EE, my son is at National Grid if/when she is looking for contacts! He actually should be graduating THIS spring but with HS AP credits and a summer semester in college he was able to graduate a year early

Anyway sorry to hijack the thread…
Hijack away. Thread served its purpose.

Company A took it very well. The recruiter's response:

"Thank you very much for the update. While we are very sorry to hear that you will not be able to join us this summer, we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
Please keep us in mind for future opportunities!"

Corporate Speak: Goodbye.
You think the last line is total BS? She can live with a blacklist if so. I just find it unnecessary. Omit the last line and you've got content-free feel good blah blah, which I consider the gold standard.

Nah, my 2 cents is that they meant it. If she's a good catch, so to speak, they'd love it if she had a disappointing experience at Company B and came back. Or, worst case scenario, if she was seen as a "replacement-level" intern, they have other options and aren't broken up about it, and would take her again if she showed up in the future. I highly doubt we're talking about a blacklist situation here.

I don’t think that’s BS at all. From my experience, if there were any kind of blacklisting going on, the tone and wording would have been very different. Honestly, HR professionals are so used to being ghosted or dealing with candidates who play games that your daughter being upfront, honest, and transparent—as soon as she had another offer—was likely genuinely appreciated.

For what its worth as someone who’s worked in Engineering (ME and ISE, not EE) for over 20 years across a variety of industries, I read Company A’s message as: We like you, we appreciated the way you handled this professionally, and we’d definitely consider you for a future opportunity if the timing is right.
