World Cup 2026

The LA stadium ain’t in LA; Dallas isn’t in Dallas; San Francisco isn’t in San Francisco; Boston’s not in Boston; the Kansas City stadium is in Missouri.

Who gives a fuck?
Apparently a lot of people at work bc when I pointed out that the France world cup's final was in.... a suburb of Paris, and Lusail is not Doha... people stopped replying. As if it's some kind of shock that not every stadium is in the center of its downtown lol.

Official poster just dropped. Goes on sale on Saturday.

Saw the dice, but on top of an apple so figured Steve Cohen had a say in the design?

Still bothered me less than drawing Lady Liberty asleep with eyelids closed

Lady Liberty asleep on the job does seem pretty apropos right about now.....
That is really bizarre and interesting. Is this a subtle protest act slipped in by the artist? Is there anywhere else that the Statue of Liberty is portrayed with eyes closed?

Was at a family event this weekend and discussion turned to World Cup 26, and some questions arose. Given our current political situation:
  • Will fans from Latin America, Africa, Middle East choose not to attend?
  • Will any of these countries express anything as formal as a fan boycott?
  • Will any of these countries' teams boycott? (Would be a very interesting juxtaposition against the complete capitulation to corruption in the last World Cup.)
  • Will ticket prices on the aftermarket deflate due to reduced foreign fan travel?
  • Will Roger Bennett and Tommy Vietor join forces again for a World Cup corruption podcast, this time aimed at the United States political backdrop?

i don't think there will be boycots from fans. i think fans still want to come from various regions, its more that the prices are way too high for everything, or people visas being rejected or expensive, or even being turned away at the airport. that is what will more than likely cause lower attendance. at least for the countries that dont have big fanbases.

i don't know how low will prices go. i dont think the club world cup is a test of it ( although some stub hub prices have been dropping for group stage games)

You might be right. But I wonder.

I was in France in April and spoke to people then who were saying they were canceling plans to travel in the US because of how offensive they found current US practices. I think the combination of anti-immigrant (brown) groups and tariffs is pissing off a lot of people who would otherwise eagerly travel in the US.

There will be people who refuse to come here just like there were people who refused to go to Qatar. But I think Qatar is a strong argument that there won't be a noticeable fan/team boycott. I still expect ticket prices to be ridiculous. But I'd watch out for players having visa issues like with the Gold Cup.

Yeah, I can't see there being a substantial boycott. Travelling internationally to attend the World Cup is very expensive. I question how much overlap there is in the Venn diagram of people wealthy enough to afford traveling to the World Cup and people socially engaged enough to consider boycotting. Not to get all eat the rich on it, but a large chunk of the people who can afford the travel are also the ones significantly benefiting from the inequities in the world right now that the current US administration is actively amplifying.
