The NIT groups will be much more exciting.
My review:
GROUP A: Joke of a group, Uruguay should be on top. My assumption is Russia due to playing at home, but Egypt may have a chance if Salah goes ham and carries them.
GROUP B: Spain and Portugal to duke it out over the Iberian Clasico (since every league and country just have to have a derby*). Don't see Morocco or Iran doing shit.
GROUP C: France should have it, but I see a potentially interesting match between Denmark and Peru fighting over the 2nd spot. I think Denmark pull through. Roos in for the ride, again.
GROUP D: This is my group of death. All 4 teams have the potential to go ham and get results. I predict Argentina and Iceland, although I wouldn't be surprised to see Nigeria and Iceland going through. I like Croatia, but they haven't looked great as a team. Lots of individual talent, but don't have a coach to put it together. Also, not sure if Argentina has put their problems behind them, as they barely got into the WC.
GROUP E: Brazil have this one, but a good fight for 2nd spot between all three teams. Switzerland have a jacked midget, Serbian fans finally didn't shoot the team in the foot, and Costa Rica may look for more of the magic that got them through the last WC. Leaning towards Switzerland, but who knows.
GROUP F: Germany top this one, with Mexico right behind them. Sweden "upset" Italy, but I don't think they get through or do too much. Could be the team that Germany crap their pants against (always one game in the group stage), but Italy more so lost to themselves than Sweden having beat them. S. Korea... sorry.
GROUP G: Belgium and England will fight over top spot, loser getting 2nd. Should be a great match-up to finish off their soul plunderings of the other two teams.
GROUP H: Poland top the group on the shoulders of gray haired Lewy. I'm going to go for a tangent and say Senegal go through. Why? Absolutely no reason, but I don't think Colombia has been great as they were during the last WC.

Who do I want? Germany.
Who do I think wins it? One of Germany, Brazil, or France.
Surprise out-of-group-stages winner? Egypt.
Surprise out-in-group-stages loser? Argentina or Portugal.

Brazil & Germany will have the easiest run to the semi finals so expect them to make it that far.

With US and Italy out (holy fuck I still can’t believe it’s true), my main team is Panama for the reason you mentioned and I took a trip to Panama last year.
The Group Of Death is clearly the United States, Netherlands, Chile and Italy.
So I got a Gear Up for Russia e-mail advetising merchandise. I clicked the link to discover it's for the "Official Store for the Mexican National Team" by Fanatics. I gotta appreciate whoever on their marketing team is thinking with the USA out they'll target the fans to root for Mexico.
