Poku Sold?

If anyone still complains about the restrictive salary cap in MLS, I give you exhibit A as to why it is necessary. 500k/year for Poku.:dollar::dollar::dollar::dollar::dollar::dollar::soccerball:
Unless $500k/year motivates Poku to score 20 goals while dishing out 13 assists each season...

I'm not being facetious when I say it's amazing how motivating money can be and his prior salary was comical. Chicken and the egg - perform well to be rewarded with a high salary (that many veterans then can't still justify/achieve the stats - baseball is a good example) or reward potential and perform accordingly??? I don't know he answer.

Depends upon the person.

If $500K is true, that's way too much, and I love Poku and am happy for him, but no way would we/should we have done that.

So at this point, Kreis, Vieira and at least 19 other MLS managers have decided that Poku is not an MLS-caliber player. He may have been exciting, but it's hard to believe that they could all be wrong and us yahoos on the forum are right.

But they both also put their faith in Saunders....not even the other 19 did that - ok, maybe 2 did...

Eric Wynalda loves him.

Not true. Other teams wanted him. Only Miami could offer the transfer fee and massive wages.

Blame MLS rules not MLS teams.
Beat me to it.

I suppose this is one of the main reasons the MLS rules are set in the first place. No disrespect to Poku, but if Poku commanded this large of a transfer fee and annual salary (by showing glimpses of greatness last season and unable to crack into PV's rotation consistently, imagine what the bidding wars would be like for other players that have a more proven track record. Do we really want to become a league that overspends on players and have increasing salaries year after year?

I love Poku just as much as the next person, but let's be real. MLS is doing smart business and it'll develop over time when it sees fit.

“This is a move that really makes sense for us,” Sporting Director Claudio Reyna said. “Miami came with a significant offer that will give us options in the summer transfer window and beyond. We know and understand that at this stage of his career playing regular first team football is very important to Poku."

:moneybag::moneybag::moneybag: When does the transfer window open?

July 4, but selling Poku only adds $7,500 in cap space , since Rawls then slides into the top 20 contracts ($70,772 - $62,508). Reyna must then be meaning to take advantage of the GAM from the transfer fee.

Big question here:

I believe we receive GENERAL allocation money, not TAM, correct?

If that is the case, TAM and GAM can NOT be combined to bring in a player. GAM could be used to purchase a player (we could spend $500,000 to bring in someone). GAM could be used to buy down a player's contract.

But $500,000 of GAM can not be combined with the $500,000 of TAM that was made available to us.

I wasn't happy how often Poku was on the bench instead of Grabavoy last year, but I give whatever credit is due to Kreis for signing Poku last year in the first place. Poku was a great addition to the Club from start to finish.

This is correct. You can't combine TAM and GAM, but you can use GAM to buy a player down to the league maximum or just use it to buy him down to within the salary cap.

One big misconception that a lot of people have, however. People seem to think that with $500K in GAM, we can go out and put a new player on a $500K contract. Our new GAM would pay that salary the first year, but what about all the subsequent years? It's more realistic to expect the GAM to get used over 2.5-3.5 years, the life of the contract of any new player we sign.

We also probably spent a sizable chunk of TAM to pay for the transfer fees of Brillant and Mata so we don't really know how much is left.

This is exactly what happened with the Galaxy. In TAM's first year, they spent all of their TAM on Omar Gonzalez to buy him down from his DP contract. Next season, they had to sell because they didnt have the money to keep him.
