Toronto Away Postmatch

I couldn't watch today's game, but from a five minute scan of twitter it seems the following are the takeaways:

-Pretty even game except for two stunning goals from Giovinco until the end
-Ref sucked, missed a straight red to TOR in first half and gave them a soft penalty at 75' to ice the game
-Pirlo really is nothing more than a traffic cone now
-TMac contributed nothing
-Team was wasteful finishing (nothing new here)
-PV played into Toronto's strength and looks like he has no clue how to compete with them

Miss anything?
Yeah, that foul called on Lewis was BS - totally shoulder to shoulder and a legit 50/50 ball since it was sliding to Lewis' side. Again, the Ref gave Gio a dangerous free kick for no reason other than he's too weak to stay on his feet.

Thanks very helpful.
Apologies, now that I look at it, it's *not* very helpful, is it?

Anyway, Opta has a team of people they call "coders" watching every match; a pair of coders with one watching one side and one the other side. And what each coder does is enter event information for everything Opta tracks. Every touch, every pass, every shot, every everything that they can code for.

That data is made available to any number of customers who then interpret it however they see fit. Whoscored?, for example, or ESPN, or the so-called "Audi Player Index" which is basically just raw Opta data multiplied by some factor to make it sound impressive.

Apologies my answer was admittedly intentionally sarcastic but in fairness since I read your post I've been reading different parts of the Opta site. Your link directed me to a super informative source of information and my sarcasm was completely unwarranted. Sorry about that and thank you.

Well that was a kick in the face....

Seemed like two very evenly matched teams save for a moment of brilliance by Giovinco because Pirlo legged-stabbed at a tackle (it was a u8 effort, nobody stabs like that and forgets to put a body on the attacker) and Gio easily sidestepped him to get his shot off... and then the ref got involved. That missed-call stud-first kick out aimed at Lewis is a red every day of the year, and was made famous by Beckham being sent off in the World Cup for the same motion not drawing contact - not calling it is criminal by the referee. The 50/50 shoulder tackle by Lewis was wrongfully called, and the ref handed Gio a dangerous free kick opp that he buried. The Altidore PK was totally BS, not even simply soft - if Altidore is putting all of his weight into the defender, there is zero chance a hand on he shoulder knocks him down, if it did then he's a puss. At that point the game was over. Glad Villa was taken off.

Random thoughts:

I'm gonna go out on a limb, but it really doesn't seem like Vieira is the best evaluator of talent because in a world that is just and fair, TMac would never be on the same field at the same time as Pirlo, and more appropriately, he'd never play in another game when the opposing team is fast & skillful. This match cried out for Lewis to start and stretch the field on the left like Harrison did on the right. Short of that, play a 442 with Jack in the midfield and Okoli up front with Villa- there was no reason why Maxi was the target on 3-4 aerial balls in the box (props for him getting his head on one).

Pirlo has no place on the team. Play slows down and little is created by placing a wing isolated in the corner. Always loved the guy, but this system doesn't suit him and he's killing our effectiveness. He really needs to just retire.

TMac should never see the field again for us. He half-asses every play. His 60 minutes were the most invisible I've seen of a player this entire year, of any game I've watched in any league. I can only hope the team trades him away, or give him away with $100k gam thrown in just to clear his salary from our books. I'm afraid his shitty effort today would torpedo any trade that could have been in play.

It was pretty obvious the team (Maxi, Ring, and White) was told not to take a yellow - many times Maxi was chasing a player and could have made the tackle and instead let up, then was furious with another player for not stepping up to engage. I counted at least three times this happened. Ring also played less aggressive backing away and giving ground until help arrived or he made his pattened lunge to dispossess the player. He was great considering his style was handcuffed.

The entire back line played well and bent, but didn't break while the game was legitimately being waged. The middle two goals were Referee specials, and the fourth goal looked to be offsides. I don't fault them on any of those, nor the first, because a midfielder or forward was supposed to close down Gio withdrawn at the top of the box.

Last thought of the posting.... maybe Reyna and company want to think harder about how they construct the team and not import so many players in their respective National Team Pools?!? We have a bunch of guys hurt, a few of which are directly related to their extra-curricular MNT matches (Wallace & Camargo) and a few that are tied to their MNT duty and worsened from repeated play once they returned (Mata never fully recovered from his initial injury away at camp, was in/out for us, and then got stomped on and is out for good, and Chanot was injured a while back and pushed through ever since for us until his body broke down). I pray Ring, Callens, Hererra and SJ (and the others, but doubtful newly healed players would be called) don't get called up next month for no other reason than to rest during the international break.

mgarbowski - PV almost certainly does not have a plan for TFC. But they also haven't the effective higher pressing team that includes both Herrera and Wallace.

As many others have said, there's a reason Ucubed is no longer Ucubed. Nowadays, he's utterly useless everywhere.

I don't fault Pirlo for anything. If someone gave me millions to hang out and kick a few around, I'd take it, too. He played fine. Our team just sucks with him in it.

Now, if they change the rules and everyone has to have a single player who can only briskly walk, we'll have the best one in the league. And look the fuck out TFC.

I have no intention of Ranting . I'll say to derek_villa that maybe Donald Trumps fat ass can play better than Andrea. .....My Question is was i called the C word on the shout box today by Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan ?

Now I agree with our Boss NYCFC_Dan NYCFC_Dan Yes I'm over sensitive and annoying when it comes to Andrea . I'm 100 % guilty ! But that's the man I love it comes with the territory . But the C word to a woman is the same as the N word to a black . We both get the vision horrible abuse . I once got a full week ban for a Gay Slur when i was backed to a wall . My notice was that I was in appropriate .

So folks what do we do with the C word when or If it's directed at the what 6 or 7 women members on this forum . ? No one would Dare throw the N word at our black members . Or be so insensitive as to call TabascoDiva the G word. I don't care how mad or annoying a woman makes you this is unacceptable boy's !!

You can throw all the slurs you want guy's you do anyway's all the time . But not the C word ! I'v never done anything that bad to anybody to cause my being beaten to pulp dead and rapped . That's the C word to a woman . If i am wrong and Midas Mulligan Midas Mulligan didn't call me this than I owe him the biggest apology on the planet ! But he most certainly used this word today .

Please think about the women in your lives guy's and how you expect the world to treat them . Then ask yourselves If and that is If i was called this today do you feel it's was justified and then how much further do you want to cross lines on this forum over anger and annoyance . Okay Jury what's your verdict ??

I remember him saying it but don't remember it being directed at you, I think it was directed at one of the players

Well, I suppose I'm glad I didn't fly out there for this particular match after all. We plain got beat. Still definitely want to go there next year though.

With all respect, NYCFC_Dan NYCFC_Dan - I think there was a lot to discuss. I enjoyed the discussion I had with SebastianBlue in the shoutbox before it got shut down. And yeah, I know I'm trying to drown my misery in walls of text and reason.

I'm gonna sidestep the discussion (like so many Giovinco shimmies ;)) on Pirlo because it's frankly kind of boring and I don't think we are going to come to any new conclusions by talking about it on the Internet. We are seeing different things and it's hard to illustrate what we see in text, asynchronously. Would still be down to talk through his game play-by-play over beers, though.

Overall, I think it's pretty clear that this is a systems / tactics failure more than a personnel failure but I think most of the dialogue has been about individual performances.

We had our "ideal midfield" (with Herrera) against TFC on July 20 and I thought we saw a lot of the same shortcomings. TFC are very happy giving up possession. A 4-3-3 tries to space people around the pitch pretty evenly. A 3-5-2 puts a lot of people in one line and tries to get that line in the right part of the pitch. Since we like to play patiently, we give TFC a ton of time to put that line in the right part of the pitch. When we turn over the ball, we give up really good chances for them to score.

We began to see glimmers of "getting it" at the beginning of the second half. When we turned over the ball, we tried to counter quickly while TFC were out of position and carved out some decent chances. But it's really clear that we're not well-drilled to do this. Villa rolls off the CBs too late. Our second-wave of attack comes too late. We are drilled to control possession and slowly get our players into position to expose overloads out wide. When we can't do that, we flounder.

I would feel more confident about our season if we can develop a second system that gets us ready to bunker and counter against teams like TFC. I think we need 2 up front to do this, but am open to SebastianBlue idea that we can still do this with 1. I just think that with 4-5-1 in defense, it's hard for our midfield line to support Villa quickly enough for us to retain possession. Ironically, the way we played Chicago after going down to 10 men is a decent blueprint for this. I was hopeful that we'd use that against TFC from the beginning of the game but sadly we stuck to our plan A too rigidly.

I also hope that the rest of MLS wises up so they can start taking more points off TFC. I haven't watched a lot of them outside of games against us, but I suspect they aren't used to teams give up possession against them and and they let their fullbacks drift up the field, leaving them open to the counter. It would almost be better if they started getting found out closer to the end of the season so they don't have time to work out a new system for the play-offs.
Apologies if I shut it down in the middle of you two talking. I had been up since 4 am and worked till 1 without a lunch. As soon as that game was over I posted the threads, walked to my room and passed out.

Number of big games we've been up for: 0
I have never said we should start Pirlo every game regardless of what people here think. But who do we start today in his stead? Miley Lopez?

I think all the injuries and Hererra's red card put Vieira in a tough spot today. I agree with others that the team is better with someone more athletic (like Herrera) in Pirlo's spot. However, when the options are Pirlo or Lopez, you kind of have to go with Pirlo.

Hopefully guys get healthy soon and everyone can figure out how to play with last week's attitude and energy all the time.

I can accept a 38 year old player not being able to keep up. Other than getting flat footed by a greatly skilled player, Pirlo had a good game for the majority. What I can't accept is a 26 year old winger not being able to keep up. He is constantly behind the play and should not be a starter on this team. Especially with Lewis sitting on the bench now.

Oh and Giovinco took over the game while Villa did little. He would have finished on Villa's attempt and Maxi's attempt.

Sweat is full of bad decisions. White is average at best. What I've learned this year with this team is our fullbacks are our weakest links. Chanot and Callens have been the MVPs.
