NYCFC 2021 Season Discussion

Too many moving parts. We could finish anywhere from 2nd to 6th, and most of the other playoff contenders have pretty wide windows on where they could finish too.

Here are the possibilities based on our seeding.

2nd: Orlando, Montreal, Atlanta or DC
3rd: Orlando, Montreal, Atlanta, New Jersey
4th: Orlando, Montreal, Atlanta, New Jersey
5th: at Atlanta or Orlando
6th: at Nashville

Maybe this is strange, but I want no part of NJ again. I want to watch soccer, not a rock fight in midfield where NJ’s whole goal is to score and win 1-0.

Worth also mentioning:

If NYCFC ends up in 2nd, we are seeing this:

Whoever comes in 4th will not meet us in the playoffs unless they beat NE. If that's Nashville, it means Red Bulls won their game, which depending on the results in ATL and Orlando could mean they end up anywhere from 5th 7th. (And we all know what 7th means with the above scenario...)

Best case scenario from a "we suck against them this year" perspective would be RB beat Nashville, we beat Philly, ATL/Orlando lose or tie, so RB ends up 5th, and then NA faces RB on the other side of the bracket.

Great stuff. If we are in 2nd, that means we beat Philly, and Nashville lost, so Nashville would be in 4th for sure.

Exactly. But it also means RB is on 50 points, which means we have to hope that ATL and Orlando don't also pass that, because we don't want to face RB.

I thought they did it NFL style where the top seeded team faces the lowest remaining seed, but I see that's not the case and it's more NCAA Tournament style.

I think they've gone back and forth on this in MLS. Can't remember where things are now, but I think it's standard tournament style.

I forget which thread it was in, but we were talking about ambition somewhere, and how ambitious teams should be making the playoffs every season.

Well, NYCFC has now made the playoffs 6 straight years, and some of the most ambitious teams in the league are out.

Including:
LA Galaxy
LAFC
Toronto FC

So yes, making the playoffs is the bare minimum acceptable result for a season. It's also not as easy as it looks, and getting a home playoff game is a damn good accomplishment.

I am dusting off my 3 expectations for NYCFC

1) Players who play hard and I enjoy rooting for (2021 - check)

2) Playing a style of soccer that is good enough that I can watch with fans of any league in the world and they will enjoy watching NYCFC (2021 - check -- there were so many games we looked like we were in a different league than our opponents including against NE)

3) A realistic chance at winning a trophy (objectively for the MLS Cup that means having at least one home playoff game)

This team is really young and our record reflects that inexperience. Its so much fun to watch these guys improve and improve. I remember Taty's first game and thinking he really had potential but was very raw -- definitely not a 9:) 4 years later he wins the Golden boot.

Not only is NYCFC a great developer of young talent we win games and meet my lofty expectations every year (they get a pass last year),

Playoff game in Yankee Stadium again this year. This time we beat Atlanta then the 2 top teams in MLS face off at Foxboro. Cant wait.

Yes -- this is something that people, I think, don't fully appreciate. We are damn good at developing young talent. Makes me really excited to see what we can do with Santi, Talles, and Thiago in the next few years. We are a win-now team, but we are also a team that does a really good job of working towards the future. We need to win a trophy, but there aren't many teams in this league I'd rather be rooting for. We are a fun team that plays really exciting stuff, and it's a good group of players to root for. Can't ask for much more on the field.

Playoff seeding this year is so almost arbitrary (outside of the Revs with the #1). For example:

-Gudi’s free kick in the 90th minute a few weeks ago is the reason why NYCFC is hosting Atlanta (and not the other way around).

-The four points that NYCFC lost to referee errors (two points in the home Toronto match for the goal nullified incorrectly and two points for the controversial PK awarded in the first RB away match) would have given NYCFC the #2 seed.

It feels like this was a weird season with the 2 “home” venues, all the red cards, the schedule congestion - and yet NYCFC still finished top 4 in the conference.

I’m sure all teams had “ref errors.”

We were 22 points behind the Supporter Shield this year? That’s tough to swallow

I didn’t watch today. Had zero confidence they were going to score any goals, figured it would be an uninspiring loss or scoreless draw.

I think I’m done for the the season. All my enthusiasm for watching this team has drained out of me— hard to believe, thinking back to moments like Thiagos last minute game winner. I’ll check in from time to time to check if Ronny’s been fired yet. Otherwise, see ya next season when hopefully we’ll have a new manager and some stadium developments! Fingers crossed.

Hi all, the above post was my last before today, October 17 after the loss to Red Bull. Since then, they haven't lost-- 3 wins and 2 draws. I'm glad they've rallied and have a home playoff game. Love that Taty won the Golden Boot. I'm still #RonnyOut but I'll be cheering them on through the playoffs!

Please don’t post again until after the MLS Cup :)
