Mls Cup Playoffs

RBA sure emptied out with a lot of time left. Was there a fire drill?
No, but a great example here of why we need to be sure that we have adequate transportation infrastructure at our future stadium. RBA is such a pain to get away from, especially via the path station. It causes people to leave games very early so they don't have to deal with it.
At Yankee Stadium, even after sold out matches i've had very little problem driving away in a reasonable amount of time. That's the benefit of having infrastructure built for what once was a 60k seater!

I don't usually like to trash talk but damn it alcohol had me going on Twitter. I'm so hype I'd fight a bear (until actually seeing one face to face would sober me the fuck up)

RBNJ played frantically the entire time, which I guess you'd have to expect when you're starting with a two goal deficit, but all those speculative long balls forward were pretty sad. Of course, Columbus was doing a superb job of choking off most every passing lane in the final third.

Glory to Columbus, though! Should be an interesting final and I can't predict a winner at all.

Did I see empty seats at Red Bull Arena again? In the 2nd leg of the conference championship no less.

Their fans have to do better. I even saw a bunch of tickets for resale online. Does RBNY lack fans enough fans? Or is it the stadium location thats the real killer?

Gotta be a real bummer for the team when your fans leave just as you need them to get behind you.

Trust me, take it from me, the worst fans in all of sports are Redbull fans. They are so miserable, they turn on their own team quickly, and really just have a loser mentality...well because....their so called team has been a loser franchise ever since their first game. As I posted it on reddit, they have had a 20 year headstart, 20 year history, and ZERO Cups. ZERO. This year was their best chance of winning MLS CUP EVER! With Seattle, Dallas getting bounced, all they had to do was beat an above avg Columbus Crew team with a crappy GK, and they failed miserably! Par for the course for that sorry ass marketing/energy drink firm....errrr.....I mean team. TEAM.

Fans only "show up" during the playoffs and as soon as it looks like things aren't going well everyone booked it. But the MLS "media" gives them a pass. If our fans did it, all we'd get is "of course they're leaving, they're plastic".

Word.

Next year when we play them, maybe we can find a way to mock them for that. Perhaps a tifo that's just a bunch of empty seats and the partially obfuscated Red Bull logo. Part time supporters, you're just some part time supporters, part time supporttttters, ....

Dont tell Red Bulls fans that. I had to argue with some dude on facebook who kept saying how the MLS should be like Europe, and that the Supporters Shield represents the real champions. Of course he didnt like it when I told him that no one ever remembers the Shield winners, nor does anyone except fans of a losing team, care how many times you've won it. Its like the President's trophy in the NHL. Its second rate to the Stanley Cup.

Of course he kept ignoring my point that the MLS doesn't have a balanced schedule like they do in Europe, or the fact that the USA isnt the only country with playoffs. The A-League in Australia does it to crown a champion, the English 2nd division has a promotion playoff, and Im pretty sure the UEFA Champions League is a playoff...since not every team plays one another an equal amount of times. But oh no "if MLS ever wants to be taken seriously and be a top league they need to stop having stupid playoffs".

Im fine with the fact that MLS uses playoffs...thats what America wants and loves. You have to be able to beat the better teams in the league when it counts, and Red Bulls have never done that. I also told the guy "there's a reason some teams go easy on their roster toward the end of the season and sometimes even give up on the Shield. Its because the MLS Cup is the REAL prize"

seeing RB play long ball was a clear sign of desperation as they had not done that all year. But C-Bus stifled their midfield so completely that they had no other option

Liga MX uses playoffs as well

exactly. The regular season and playoffs is how you determine true champion. If you can be one of the better teams in the regular season and make it to the playoffs and then when the pressure is the highest, you beat the best teams in the playoffs, then you truly deserve to be called champions of the league. Look at the World Cup. Same system. Group play is like a regular season to see who will advance to knock out stage. Same thing with champions league. The truth is the Supporters Shield means little. It means more then the Presidents Trophy in the NHL but not by much. It gives you a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League. Nothing more, nothing less.

it gets criticized but not to the extent that it does in MLS i think. The problem for many in Mexico is that there are two tournaments with playoffs so they feel it cheapens the competition. there were rumors that they were going to go very MLS like with full season and then playoffs but not conferences just straight 1-8 qualify but who knows if it will even happen.

Here is my situation. I attended the first Metrostars match in 1996 with my dad and I witnessed Nicola Caricola score an own goal right in front of our eyes. We were sitting right behind the goal. That was already the beginning of the end. I attended a total of 5 matches in their 20 year history. To be frank, I have not followed the MLS again till this year. I could not follow the product at the time, the downward clock, NFL hash marks, tie-breaker shootout but certainly the location for a supposed NY based team did not help.

RB Arena is really nice however. I hope we build just as nice if not better.

With the rate that MLS is expanding I predict that there will be never been a balanced schedule. I would rather see the whole we play during FIFA breaks thing corrected before a balanced schedule.

On that last shot off the post, it looked like Kamara was going to clear it off the line if it got that far. A great hustle play by him - especially when Shaun Wright Phillips was ball watching and might have gotten to the rebound.

Still, can you imagine if they had tied it and we had seen extra time with basically zero Red Bulls fans in the arena?
