LAFC - Postmatch

A fair result tonight, I think. This was just a really great, nail biter of a game. Reminded me a lot of the Atlanta game, and one thing that tells you is that LAFC is pretty good.

Despite all the quality chances tonight, all four goals involved an element of luck: penalty, own goal, cross getting loose, cross takes a weird deflection.

LionNYC LionNYC tell us about the stadium when you get a chance.

Okay, so I had seats at VIP South which was essentially Pitchside seats. The club access is the same as the Field Club seats behind the benches. The stadium is gorgeous from the design to architecture. It’s the nicest I’ve seen thus far. You walk through this beautiful marble entrance to get to the clubs.

The Field Club is simple. A decent spread, Legends has more. Heineken and house red and white wine are included. As are other non alcoholic beverages. The Field Club is where the players come out so it’s essentially the tunnel to the stadium so you can see the walk out. They had some of the club owners (the notable ones) talking to fans and hanging out. After the game the club stays open an hour after the match and yes, they’re still serving. You can watch the press conferences behind a glass wall (can’t hear anything however). Saw Claudio, Stemp, Vieira, and Jonathan Lewis in the club area/by the field.

The seats are incredible. You’re right on the field with nothing blocking your vision besides the linesman. It is difficult to see the game in the far nearside corners but there’s always the screen. After the match, they put up a goal with facing out and if you had access to ththe Field Club, you could take a penalty kick. Will Ferrell played goalie for some. Yeah, Will Ferrell. I did not partake. Another NYCFC fan siting next to me who was out there asked for a photo and Will said, “Not with that jersey. You’re the enemy.”

As for the game, I thought the result was fair. We could have won, they could have won. Vieira kicked a bottle after the Berget miss, which was out biggest missed opportunity. As noted, I helped with a quick throw in. I also, I think more importantly, stopped the LAFC player from getting the ball when they had their thrown in. Always let the opposing player get the ball from the ball kid.

Fun place. Fun night.

The roof doesn’t keep the sun away as the far side was in the side even late into the match. It was loud but not Atlanta loud. The standing supporter section was great. There’s a supporter bar at the top by Heineken. It’s a different experience than Atlanta but I’d give it the edge based on soccer oriented atmosphere.

And one other anecdote...

Villa was angered to be substituted. When he saw he number in red, he put his hands up and was pissed off but no serious.

I gave him a standing ovation. Then sat down. A kid 10-14 years old screamed “trash” at Villa. I quickly turned around with a serious face and the kid was a deer in lights. Then I smiled.

Respect your league MVP, 400+ goal scorer.

I thought his chance that was saved was actually well taken, but just a great save by Miller in timing coming off his line.

Nah, fam. Give that same chance to Josef Martinez, Miguel Almiron or Tito Villalba. Guaranteed goal.

Berget did better with his breakaway chance. THAT was well taken but missed by a hair.

I honestly think he should have taken a slight touch there to try and round the keeper. As it was, it was pretty easy for the keeper to judge where ball and player would meet and rush to that spot for a save. Another touch might have given Medina space on an open goal. It's also possible that the keeper would have been able to execute a tackle, but it's also possible that the keeper would have taken out Medina, leading to a penalty and a second yellow.

i guess you take it....goals came from mistakes on both ends. our wing play sucks now but with tajouri back we get some of that back. i still dont know the berget deal. i guess its for his size and distrubs defenders but his touch is bad, many times i see he gets the ball and it awkwardly bounces of him. that LW is a question mark now.

Meanwhile in the away supporters section... great turnout of 40-50 NY travelers and SoCal transplants. We only had half of a section- the top half was not blocked off, but there were no issues with any LA supporters (heavy security/police/front office presence). The stadium prides itself on local vendors, and delivers with lots of craft beer options and some delicious tacos.
I went to meet a friend in the “north end” and they were pretty strict about allowing only those with supporters tickets in- he had to come up to the concourse to meet me, but you could definitely notice how steep it was (34 degrees- steepest in MLS). I was also told that once the match started i wouldn’t be allowed on that side of the stadium even at the concourse level, “for my safety”.
One of the “highlights” of the stadium was supposed to be wide concourses, but near us they were super cramped at halftime. Not sure if they’re like that all around or just by where we were.
We got to see Will Ferrell too, as he stopped by the section below us and spent some time with fans.
While waiting to be escorted out of our section, Kwame stopped by to say hi- you’ll probably see this on a certain someone’s video documentary soon.
Save room for street food while leaving the stadium, good stuff.
All in all a fun trip and looking forward to heading back in 2020

I had VIP Seats on my couch with one lamp turned on instead of two which I only use for fifa and under no circumstance will i ever use three lamps. You walk into the apartment on golden wood floors made by the finest of Polish craftsman my building has to offer. To your right there is a free spread of food that is so available to the fans that you can make it yourself. after that there is a glass window which you can look outside and see cars and a tree, but cannot hear anything if the window is closed. then we sat down in this beautiful area where the couch is, one of the best i have ever seen in my life, brown, slightly used but not yet body molding as not enough people have vegetated enough on this particular area of the couch.

The game was ok, i think i helped nycfc when i yelled at the tv once in a while, berget once looked at me when i said "shave your beard you indigenous swine" he then smiled (at me, not the camera's) and the camera changed to a replay of a throw in. my girlfriend then told me to shut off the tv where i turned at her with a death stare then smiled and told her to take a hike. she smiled back. as she walked away i muttered "stupid red bull fan.
gotta respect the man that takes sponge baths at 32 years old.

Are three lamps too bright or does it mess with the feng shui of the room with more than two lamps lit? Or is it simply glare differential?

As for the game, we sucked ass again in the first half and then managed to save it in the second.
Team seems off to me for the past month or so. Even with the home win vs. Dallas, the team doesn't seem to be functioning at a high level of fluidity.
Tajouri-Shradi should be a starter for each game unless he's out injured, that much is clear.
Would like to see Villa - Berget - Isi as the front 3 next game. Let Medina come in at the 65th minute to prove his worth. Too much thrown on him to be a starter right away.

I still think the Villa criticism is completely unwarranted. Thought he had a really good game got a goal and should have had an assist if Burger didnt totally flub it (make excuses all you want, that should have been a goal). Hes also currently rocking 5 goals and 2 assist with only 6 starts (8 total appearances). Calling for him to not make the 11 is pretty absurd.

Berget is not very good. Aside from that obvious goof, hes clumsy and does a very poor job at winning 50/50 balls. A lot of times he doesnt even jump for them. He tries making off balanced crosses/passes that go nowhere good and just gives up possession too often.

Yes the own goal was unfortunate but Tinnerholm needed to a better job marking his man on that header. Overall i thought he had a fairly poor game aside from maybe 15-20 minutes.

Overall i didnt think we looked good and were lucky to get away with a point. It took practically a PK and then another miracale goal from Shradi. Thats not how i want to win games, and is not sustainable going forward and does not inspire confidence for the playoffs.
