Is anyone here subscribed to The Athletic? How is it? Is it just articles that i can find on Espn.com anyway or is it more in depth. I'm more interested on the non soccer stuff in there ( baseball, basketball, Football) i assume its not X's and O's are they evergreen pieces. Is it like Howler? or like The Blizzard for soccer in terms if their writing?

Yeah I have it. Lots of features and analysis. They don't really do traditional game stories, they try and go deeper, and usually succeed depending on the writer. Their Yankees coverage this season was must-read; lots of features. They'll do plenty of analysis pieces, I believe the Athletic is where the breakdown of Luis Severino's pitch-tipping was found, as an example. Their Rangers coverage is very solid, all analysis, trying to break down why games went the way they did.

I've been a member since they launched in NY. Well worth it. I use it primarily for the Islanders since the top beat writer for Newsday jumped ship over to them but have found myself reading a little bit of everything from all over. Their writers will write two types of stories primarily:

    - Either breaking down the team you are reading about to such a fine degree that you feel like you are right there with the team
    or

    - They post absolutely well constructed features about players, their history, both in the sport and outside of it and really drill down to the core of the players. They are starting to try to take what The Players Tribune does and make it their own in this respect.

They have full soccer coverage for all the major Euro leagues too which is really nice.

NYCFC coverage is by Christian Araos. Not sure if you've read anything by him before but most people either love him or hate him. They've also brought in Kristian Dyer to write for the team as well, who's been giving a lot more of an analytical breakdown to the team.

Also keep in mind, most of their writers are from other publications, such as Newsday, NY Post, ESPN, TSN, etc. so you can try to get a good feel for how they write based off of previous articles. But I do have to say that The Athletic gives the writers a lot more freedom with what they can/can't write about and it's very clear reading some of the articles.

They also do 40% off a yearly subscription fairly often. Would poke around looking for one of those codes to use.

Agree with this. Their soccer coverage vs. the rest of the sports they cover is almost night and day. I read it mostly for their hockey coverage now and since I'm in NY and a fan of a west coast team, it's a level of detail I've never had. Really intuitive articles on the team that you wouldn't usually get with a regular newspaper or an ESPN/SI type article.

I'd recommend getting it for a year if you have other sporting interests than soccer, which you mentioned FantazmaFantazma . Haven't read it for baseball or basketball, so I can't give a fair feedback there, but if the articles are similar to their hockey/NFL insight it will be well worth it.

yes its what i was going to do try it for a year see whats up and if i can get the discount then why not. I once read a nycfc one that a co worker showed me and it was meh nothing really amazing and it was short, but i did hear that hockey and other sports they are really worth it.

For Soccer me personally i like these football times and the blizzard were excellent and the type of writing i sometimes want to read for US based sports.

The Athletic Soccer has some great stuff, worth the five bucks a month even without all the other sports.

im biased, so im always skeptical of the soccer coverage. I have read the blizzard and These Football times and to me those are excellent, however its mostly evergreen pieces not necessarily about all current events week to week. Still, the style they do i enjoy.

The Athletic does publish soccer longform from time to time, but yeah, different project than what The Blizzard does.

Athletic is exceptionally good at eviscerating the Jets. Subscription worth it just for that.

The other writers like Tenorio & Parchman they brought in to cover MLS are fantastic.

Haha so it's either Dyer with his analytical approach or Araos with his hot takes and emotionally charged diatribes.
