I think this works too. Funny part is that this is the narrow diamond formation we were always told Kries preferred, yet we never saw this clearly logical version of it last year.
I'm not sure Mix is a good enough defender to play a holding role. He runs hard and has good stamina, but he looked out of sorts when we played him deep last year.

The issue with the midfield is that we have to have Lampard and Mix on the field, and neither of them do many things that win you games right now. That could change next year, but it's an issue when speculating.

Mix looks his best on the national team when he plays defensively, and has said he prefers to play the 6. I'd like to give him a full chance there (or another chance there if you're counting the handful of games he got next to Jacobson early in the year).

NYCFC are eyeing local GK talent from Columbia University.

Jackson has been invited to train with a local MLS franchise, NYCFC, earning a tryout with the newest team in the MLS. The interest in Jackson by NYCFC comes as no surprise, with the Paradise Valley, Arizona, native having recently earned his fourth All-Ivy League honor. Jackson ended his career with the sixth most career saves and sixth most shutouts in Columbia’s storied men’s soccer history, stopping 194 shots and posting 16 career shutouts in his four years.

“Jack’o is a tremendous leader and goalkeeper, thus he has the eye of our local MLS franchise and other clubs across the country,” said Anderson. “Finding the right club for a young goalkeeper is the key to success and I have no doubt that will happen in the coming months.”

I agree with this. The only question is who gives you the best cover defensively.

Villa-Poku-Shelton
Frank-Pirlo-Mix
You have concerns about the left side of defense but probably put Frank and Poku in the best spots offensively.

Villa-Mullins-Frank
Poku-Pirlo-Mix
Left side D just got a little better. But not sure Poku is on his best side.

Villa-Mullins-Frank
Mix-Pirlo-Poku
Now right side of D might be the weak side. Remains to be seen how Mix plays on the left. But Poku switching field to Villa would be a thing of beauty.

Bottom line, our offense with any of these lineups could be highly potent. Put our TAM into 2 solid CBs and I'm happy with any of the above.

Villa - Mullins - Poku
Lamp - Pirlo - Mix

When did Mix play deep last year?
He never played as a traditional deep destroyer, but he was forced to play deeper than he usually does before Lampard arrived. It may not show up on lineup charts, but Mix was occupying the space directly in front of the right Centerback during several games before the summer transfer window kicked in.

This was done to help transition the ball forward - we were having real trouble playing out of the back at the time.

We need an Ozzy Alonso. Mix doesn't have a great place in this lineup.

I think you're mis-remembering slightly. It is true that Mix played deeper earlier in the year, but Jacobson was actually playing the deepest in the spring and showing up in the hole in front of the centerbacks (in games he was playing disciplined). I believe it was Jacobson's lack of distribution skills that were killing us early.

I would say Mix never played deeper than an 8. Then got a little time as a 10, was tried as a winger, and then benched. They never really tried him as a 6 - his actual favorite position and the one we needed the most help with.

Why Kreis thought Jacobson was better than Mix is one of the bigger head-scratching decisions he made.

Josh re-ups.......

Kennedy was on a $233k salary compared to Saunders at $90k. Much rather have Saunders than Kennedy.
Agree. Kennedy in L.A. is an entirely different situation compared to Kennedy in New York and if you look at whats out there at the moment, there isn't anyone available better than Saunders.

You meant in the US. Our scout can't find some awesome 18 yr old goalies from South America/Asia/ Africa for 250k a year? Jeees

You have to consider that we only have so many international spots, I'd rather keep Saunders at 90k and use them on cb, cdm and or St.
GK is one position America can actually develop too. If CFG wants us to play a style similar to what City plays we are going to have to use those DP and international spots for those types of attacking positions that America has been the best at developing.

In a 4-3-1-2 (or 4-3-3), you can play with a less fluid midfield. Three holding guys, where one makes a run forward at a time (usually Lampard, sometimes Mix) while the other two hang back (usually Mix for defensive purposes and Pirlo because that's his style). It's a bit more static, something our older midfield should be able to handle.
I actually thought this was pretty evident in the first half against PR. Lamps and Poku were noticeably taking turns going forward, Lamps more than Poku.

I love the link play between Pirlo and Poku. I think they enjoy playing with one another.

But you need to score goals to win and Poku does that. We're so lucky to have him.
