Did you get that number from the club? Any further details on it? Last season? All full season, or full season equivalent?
Even so, not a positive sign for the club. I'd like to know what the club is doing differently year 1 to year 4 to grow interest in the club and improve season ticket numbers.
Does anyone know when we can begin to use to trade-in program for this season? I believe we're allowed to trade in tickets for up to 6 games this year for tickets to other games... I'm sure we'll get an email about it, but does anyone recall when we got it last year? I assume it will be after we get the physical STH packages.
Officially un-official as in, it’s a number directly from the club from some sponsorship materials.
I don't work in the corporate, sports, or entertainment world but if I walked into my marketing and sales departments and said our year over year numbers were flat or down I sure as hell would want to know why and how they were going to change it.
What have we seen that is different from previous years? That's a serious question I'm asking. Cutting the number of seats in the stadium and allowing us to trade in a couple more games is not a solution.
So down roughly another 1,000 from last year. We've shed 20% of our season ticket base in 4 years. Do you blame this more on the stadium situation and/or lack of "big" DP signings? Do you think there's other factors that play into this?
Listen, I complain a lot about not having our own stadium but YS isn't terrible. It's easy to get to and the price for tickets is cheap compared to other leagues. We already play winning soccer. So what's the team doing to attract new customers?
My feeling... and this is just my own opinion. The team doesn't do enough to reach out to the northern suburbs in Westchester, Rockland, and Greenwich.
YS is great as a temporary home. But it needs to be temporary and right now, nobody has any reason to believe it is. People that have an interest in watching soccer don’t want to watch it in a baseball stadium. It lacks the atmosphere and experience people want.
Now, your point about reaching suburban households is probably true. We’re not attracting a lot of new people. But first we need to address why we’re losing people we already had, especially because as you said, we win and the price point is good.
Maybe I’m wrong but I really do believe the lack of a SSS is at least partially responsible for the steady decline in numbers. Once we get a stadium, the team will have a narrow window to reignite interest in people we lost and attract new fans.
Let’s pray they are up to it.

Ok ok. That was overstated on my part, I admit. Let me rephrase- win a cup. Cause let’s admit it, anything less in NY simply will not do.

Much more the lack of big name signings. Maxi and Medina could play as well as they’re capable of but they’d never approach the gate effect of Lampard or Pirlo.
Tickets are readily available so there’s no need to invest in every game just to get in. Days of the week and start times may discourage families from entertaining the idea of attending every match.
We have Villa and had Pirlo and still losing STH’s every year. It helps to have new big names but that can’t be the only reason we’re losing people.
Curious how our first 4 years compares against other franchises and other sports.
Curious how many incoming and how many outgoing, and again how that compares to other franchises in other sports.
Curious why new STH are joining, and what our hypotheses are about why people join, which are true and which may still need to be proven or discarded.
Curious why people are giving up their STs.
For the last two lines of inquiry, I suppose we could pose a public survey. I'm probably not bothered enough to do it myself, but you seem pretty bothered...
This seems like a pretty basic analytical approach to start with. I'd be surprised if the club isn't doing it, since they seem to be very much a best-practice kind of organization.
Anecdotally, a lot of people I know leave NYC (for non-NYCFC reasons
) and I imagine it's hard work picking up new STs to replace them sans the lure of an inaugural season.
