Is this right? It depends on the loan timing, but surely if he's in Saudi Arabia through 2021, he returns to us in the last year of his contract (2022), when any transfer fee will be much lower, and at some point he'd even be eligible to leave on a free transfer. There's no scenario I can see where his value goes up as a result of playing two seasons in the Saudi leagues.

Unless you're suggesting that for some reason there's no market for Mitrita right now, and NYCFC is hoping they can farm him out temporarily while they wait for one to develop?

Where did two seasons in the Saudi league come from? Everything that's been reported so far has been a one year loan.

Yeah, I get that he'll have some limited time remaining on his contract (1.5 years), but for someone desperate to be out right now, NYCFC has no leverage in regards to selling him. There are limited options with most transfer windows closed so very few potential teams that could even bring him in right now.

I just think a transfer fee for him now with incredibly limited potential options would be much lower than a transfer fee next summer with (virtually, in terms of transfer window) all options open and 1.5 years remaining on his contract.

i think this is assuming he plays well over there. if hes crap or also has coach that doesnt like him, then we stuck with him again for 2021 and unhappy. though if that is the feeling then id hope they be looking for another buyer or loan when time comes.

whats still not clear to me is if we can replace him with another DP while he is away. im not finding a clear answer anywhere.

twitter has alot of assumptions too. since apparently rule book is not clear. well see if we have pull to let nycfc sign a DP ( assuming nycfc FO want to in 2021).

It’s also possible that the amount the Saudi club is paying NYCFC for the loan is in excess of Mitrita’s salary. In other words that the Club is recouping some of the original transfer fee that way.

Also remember the league is paying the salary of a DP up until the max budget charge. Mitri last year made under that. If the Saudi club is just paying salary, we save no money. If they aren't paying a loan fee that covers whatever charge his transfer fee will be next year, he could still carry a budget charge and DP spot.

2020 says he'll get hurt playing for Romania and fail the medical.

2 Open DP spots in 2021. If NYCFC doesn't think Ronny Deila is the coach to win us titles, he shouldn't be in control of those signings.

He added that Mitrita’s contract is guaranteed through 2022. NYCFC have options on his deal for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

So if Mitrita isn't purchased, we'd get him back as a DP back for the 2022 season.

Honestly, we should be commending NYCFC for finding a way to help Mitrita. They could have easily have said no to this. Obviously the pandemic has changed how travel into and out of the US works, so this story from the team really does make a lot of sense. This is not the sign of NYCFC "crumbling" or any of the stuff that was typed in this thread earlier this week -- this is a sign of a healthy team that does right by its players.

On a serious note, I do think this move points to a broader challenge that the US (and MLS particularly) is going to have attracting international talent, if it keeps failing to get its shit together on coronavirus. I doubt Mitri is the only player wondering if they belong here, and I can't imagine there are too many big name European players desperate to move their families to New York right now.

Athletic is reporting it as $2 million. I think my source had included contract considerations in that number.

Very commendable job by the NYCFC team. I figured this was the case and people speculated about this earlier as well, and I think it makes sense 100%. They seem reluctant, but happy to make a player feel good. And this is not just a one-off thing, we know from other players' experiences that they all feel this way - when Keaton signed he said he felt like the team did everything they could to make him happy, etc. So I think on the player side of things, they really know how to handle their shit.
