2025 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs

First round is almost wrapped up (just the NYCFC “are we ever going to play this game” tomorrow) and not a single away team has gotten a result in the first game.

NYCFC you know what to do.

odds are definitely against us considering our head to head vs charlotte but this team is definitely capable. i choose to believe!

Has this ever happened before?
So far every single matchup in the playoffs has been won by the home team.
There have been exactly 0 upsets in any of the matches, all the top conference teams have won (at home) so far.

first "upset" will be tonight.

tbf - most games have been pretty tight aside from miami and vancouver. so those game 1 results could have gone either way.

didn't do the research or anything but as I said in another post, several higher seeds were knocked out the first round last year.

Minnesota vs Seattle in particular felt like a total toss-up, though maybe I’m just undervaluing Minnesota’s style. Seattle played well and threw everything they had at them, yet still couldn’t break through. It’s impressive how strong the Loons’ defense is, but it’s wild that their entire game plan seems to rely on scoring from a set piece or holding on for a 0–0 draw and winning in penalties. It’ll be interesting to see how far they can take that.

I mean not that I have that much confidence in scoring from free kicks, but I like our chances with freese in goal if we decide to play for PKs

i'm just gonna say it... did shwafta make this win happen?

also - first away side to win this round and MLS gives us no love. had a big writeup for charlotte coming into this game with nothing for us. I expect a solid writeup for us winning.

You’re welcome folks.

Glad we kept the results from being total chalk in round 1.

We actually aren’t an upset as the betting lines had NYCFC as the favorite.

They mentioned that in the broadcast and it surprised me. I'm not at all shocked we won but looking as an outsider going in Charlotte has an extreme HFA and an edge in several other basic stats. FotMob predict went for Charlotte 44% to 29%. I guess the betting folks were looking at Zaha and Biel.

I was mostly referencing shwafta's post with my use of "upset".

betting lines had us as the favorite, but no zaha and biel. things might have been different. we were also the lower seed, so in that sense it was an upset as well. it's not all about the betting Lion! haha

LAFC is hosting a playoff game that begins during Game 5 of the World Series hosted by the Dodgers.

Is MLS trying to make sure no one watches it's product? You have to try to have a scheduling own-goal that poor.

you do realize there are plenty of people out there who don't watch baseball right?

I haven't watched a single minute of the world series but have watched most of the playoff games.

LA is a big market. It can handle two of their teams playing at the same time, even if one is playing a more important series. Not to mention the global korean population who probably all signed up for MLS season pass just to watch Son tuning in.

Is there a venue based reason or something else to explain why the LAFC game is so late? We have the weird Tuesday-Saturday-Friday schedule because of the Panthers but I have not found anything about that series. It's so odd to have our schedule heavily impacted by stadium sharing conflicts and yet it has nothing to do with us.

730p local time seems like a normal game kickoff.

for a wednesday, it's probably better than a 6pm kickoff due to school, work, and rush hour traffic.

I meant later day as compared to other first round games that started 5 days ago.

I do realize that, but the Dodgers are massive in Los Angeles and it is the World Series. This isn't the regular season or even the NLCS, it's the World Series, and that schedule was put together before the MLS schedule was. Why did they intentionally decide to put LAFC in this window? They could have played Saturday afternoon or anytime on Sunday. Why are they going up against Game 5 of the World Series? Starting the series on a Wednesday is weird enough. Going against the home team in the World Series is crazy no matter how big the market is.

We've seen the Raptors and Maple Leafs change gametimes to not go up against the Blue Jays, it's not outrageous to try to avoid this kind of thing.

ah yes. that makes sense now that I re-read your post. you're right. that is kind of strange.

EDIT: according to reddit, there was a 21 pilots concert at BMO over the weekend. then they had to have some time to fix the surface i guess.

this is why i hope the club does not allow hosting concerts while the team is playing.

That's crazy. NBA and NHL have rules that buildings can't have a lot of events in April, May, and June so they can schedule playoff games. I'm surprised MLS doesn't have a similar rule during our playoffs for team-owned stadiums.
