Ian was so funny on the broadcast just outwardly making fun of him. "Get up and take your red card, there's nothing wrong with ya."
After 24 hours of setting in with the result here are my thoughts:
It was super spreader event. There looked to be many, many more Orlando fans in the stands than during prior COVID attended games. Not only an unfair advantage due to local politics, but not a great look for the league.
No objects to the handball calls, either of them.
There was a dangerous play foul by Chris Mueller on Gary Mackay-Stevens in the 21' minute that was just called a foul that should have been a yellow card. That's when the chippy-ness started and Orlando began to challenge dirty. From there, Allen Chapman couldn't control the match.
The Ruan challenge on Tinnerholm was universally called a red card on social media, except from Chapman and the rookie video assist referee (this was his first match as VAR) didn't think it was a clear and obvious error. My word.
Ruan's yellow card challenge was at the 77', it was at 90+5' that Anton Tinnerholm was forced to be substituted. During that span of the match, we have some great attacking challenges from the right wing with Tinnerholm making some dangerous crosses into the box. The talk is that there was video evidence that he was shaking after the challenge. He cleared the concussion protocol for NYCFC, but then the medical video referee makes the decision. It honestly looks very suspect.
Allen Chapman not knowing the rules of the penalty shootout is just poor refereeing. Know your role, do your job. I honesty didn't have any gross objections to Chapman's refereeing of our match since Yangel Herrera left the team. But in 2020 he gave Red Bulls the 1-0 win and leaned for Orlando in most of the match.
There didn't look to be any cohesion of the players during the penalty shootout. They just stood at the line together, not even locked arms or anything. You'd think that one player would tell everyone when a right back is playing to shoot low. Taty took the first PK against the Orlando right back and did just that. Cacha was second and did the same thing. Why would Gudi do differently?
We cramped up hard. While we had two weeks off. The core players of this squad played close to 95% of minutes during the match. Deila said that he only subs if players can't walk anymore or tactically change this. That isn't good coaching. Imagine playing in CCL, US Open Cup, MLS, and then the playoffs. Squad rotation during the season.
MLS social media was really pushing the Orlando story during week before the match. And they're calling this a heroic win for Orlando. Technically, the match ended in a draw. I want to see Orlando embarrassed in their next match.
MOTM: Sean Johnson. That shootout save against Nani could have been historic. Gallese never saved a penalty, Maxi just missed his.

And Ruan's hit didn't even go to VAR. WTH! Once Timmerholm was forced to leave we were a completely different team, lacking in the attack.
I thought Taty was quiet because Orlando was taking him out of the game physically while off the ball.
The ending, while a bit embarrassing for the league was a bunch of fun. I might have jinxed Taty's first pk attempt. As he's about to take it I turned to my son and say "watch, he's gonna miss cause he feels bad for Maxi..." .
so true that Jansson was all over Taty all game. Grabbing and holding him every chance he got and Chapman let it all god. Not a single call even when it was blatantly obvious. This was probably due to Taty's reputation, but refs are supposed to call a fair game, which just didn't happen. Chapman is on my shit list.
i think the consensus is that yes they were confused and thought they won.
I have an Eirik Johansen goalkeeper kit. Don't buy backup goalkeeper kits.

OCSC thought they won because Chapman blew the whistle and pointed to the center circle. He lost track of the count! He should seriously never referee again.
I think the failure to give Ruan a red card for targeting Tinnerholm’s head gave Chapman a psychic concussion.

its Allen effing Chapman. He continues to be a disgrace especially in matches with nycfc.
- In the three matches that Allen Chapman has refereed NYCFC vs. Orlando, Orlando has won all three
- 2-1 win vs. Chicago in July 2017, Chapman missed a clear and obvious penalty for Yangel Herrera than gave him two yellow cards in the span on 4 minutes.
- In a 1-1 draw vs. Houston (in Connecticut), Chapman allows Houston a quick restart as the ball was still rolling to allow Houston's lone goal in the game. The ball cannot be moving during a restart.
- May 2018 in a 3-1 loss to Houston, Chapman called this a yellow card on the field. DisCo suspended the Houston player for 2 matches.

Which rule gives us a 3-0 win? The problem was that they used a sub they had, but weren't supposed to be allowed to use cause it was a shootout. Think that comes down on the refs more than the team. Though you would think an experienced coach would know the rules too.
It would be a forfeit given an illegal substitution. I'm gasping at straws here and just thinking really, really, really far outside the box and realm of possibilities.

LOL. No, that won't happen. Rowe played no impact on the game and even though he stepped on the field, the mistake was fixed before it changed the game in any way.
I know, but if Rowe's substitution was permitted and he did partake in the shootout NYCFC could appeal. Allen Chapman's poor refereeing could have helped out NYCFC. Unfortunately, they got the rules correct.
