Cosmos postgame

B-Squad lost.

<---------least surprised person on the planet

Looking forward to the next match that matters.

I have lost most of my interest in this season. There is nothing to play for. Not even pride because we already lost that during the NJ gangbang.

Not to defend PV's decision, but wasn't Jack waiting with the 4th ref before the goal?
Yes. I am sure that PV was convinced the match was going into extra time. Whoops.

Overall the biggest problem I saw was that all the decisionmaking was too slow, and especially too slow when the Cosmos were pressing like they were.

Speaking of which, the Cosmos were regularly committing *three* players to pressing whichever NYC player lingered in possession, and yet the fact that huge holes were opened up and we had at least two players free went almost completely uncapitalized upon.

In the second half Martinez on the left wing was unmarked most of the time and yet almost never switched to. A bunch of us in the front row kept screaming SWITCH LEFT! SWITCH LEFT! and waving our arms like we were guiding an airplane into the gate.

I could understand Harrison not playing. I could understand him playing 90. I could understand him playing 30 and I could even understand him playing 20.

But there is simply no way to understand him playing 2.

And how did Tommy Mac get in the dog house?
I don't think Tommy was in the doghouse, I think PV didn't want to play him. Wanted to rest him for Philly. Was hoping he wouldn't need him.

Lip service all around. We shouldn't fall for it again next year.

I felt the fans were incredibly disrespected by the lineup, lip service and lack of ambition tonight. After that first half I would have expected a change for the second. Nope.

Somehow this tweet made me feel a lot better:

Bright spots:
  • Johansen looked decent.
  • Gomez and Martinez had solid games. Gomez coughed up the ball a couple of times after overestimating his pace, but I think this will have been good experience for him.
  • Mikey tried his bollocks off.
  • Poku was the only player brave enough to hold the ball and beat players. His defensive work rate is abject and I'd still love to see him up front. Beginning to think I'm taking crazy pills, as it seems so obviously like the only position he's suited for.
  • Mena was OK! His strength, willingness to stay on his feet and doggedness in 1/1s is a massive plus.
  • Vieira admitted that he made a mistake. Let this be the beginning of an era of radical transparency.
Dark spots:
  • As much as I disapprove of coaches throwing players under the bus, I think we've seen enough of Mix, Mullins and Shelton now to be OK with them not being on the roster.
I suppose if we can grab a win against Philly, this performance and selection will be somewhat vindicated.

And yet if we don't win Saturday, tonight's lineup becomes an even bigger missed opportunity and Fck-you to the fans.

Whats the point of entering a competition to field a B-squad; and the icing is that it includes two forwards that either don't run or run in circles?

This for me was a royal crap job by viera.

You've got your best players sitting a mile away from the rest of the team in their fancy street clothes watching the game together. Meanwhile you've got a number of players who just last year were regular starters. See Mix, Mullins, Bolouchy, Mena. No wonder why you see Mullins try to dribble through three players and try to score instead of passing off to a wide open poku for the goal.

This game was a tryout for second tier players who were once valued under kries.

That's your problem right there. These guys weren't interested in winning. They were interested in impressing the coach. No wonder they lost, their confidence was zapped out of them the moment they walked on the field.

I get the fact we've got an important game against philly on Saturday but you can't let Villa, pirlo, Saunders et al. watch from the proverbial VIP booth and expect your b team guys to feel any comararderie or confidence to win a game.

I blame the vieras lack of emotional and social intelligence for this loss.

Not to defend PV's decision, but wasn't Jack waiting with the 4th ref before the goal? I think PV was expecting him to play 35 minutes, unless he won it first.
Jack came on late because Mena cramped up. He was about to go on at the 75 min or so but Mena was hurt and had to come off first.

Again, the players care. We know that. The guys on the pitch tonight wanted to win. They were just hamstrung by what their superiors did.

One more point: Vieira talked all week about how important this game was, but this is the second straight year -- and the second different coach -- who treated the US Open Cup in this fashion. I think that tells you that the decision to go with a B squad for tonight's game wasn't necessarily a Vieira decision, it was an organizational decision. As a franchise, they don't seem to deem this tournament important, for whatever reason.

Ehhhh Mikey cared. Can't say the same about most of the other players on the pitch. They showed little effort and stunk up the place...I'm looking at you Khiry and Mullins. To add insult to injury all the good restaurants closed at 9pm.

Khiry especially. For some of these players it must have been an insult to be chosen to play. It kind of means you're not playing this weekend.

And that's what epitomizes nycfc mentality as busch league. When Barça plays in Copa del Rey the players don't hang their heads and half ass it. He was an absolute end to end half stepping eyesore.

It makes me understand the idea of having no DPs. This way there is no dividing line on your team. No superstar players to compare yourself with. The unfortunate thing I realized by watching this game was that the team on field tonight is our team without star DP players and we can't beat a mid table NASL team. That's scary.

"Of course as a manager and as a coach I’m the one who made the selection and it’s the first one where I put my hand in the air to say that I made a mistake when I made a decision to rest so many players. I’m also the first responsible for the performance of the players but at the same time I strongly believe that the players didn’t perform today. This is unacceptable."

PV with the head feint towards taking responsibility, then throwing the players he picked under the bus, train, plane, ocean liner, 18-wheeler and space shuttle.

Vieira said he put out a starting 11 and a bench that he thought would win the game. Either A) He overestimated the performance and ability of our guys B) Underestimated the performance and ability of the Cosmos or C) Doesn't get it. This game solely rests on him. The objective is the win the game. You play to win the game. You play to win the game in regulation. I think A, B, and C are all correct in this case. Yes, we have an early Saturday match against Philadelphia (that we're honestly likely to lose or tie even though Philadelphia played their starters for their Open Cup game) and we have our next game a week later in Seattle. You obviously don't want your players playing an extra 30 minutes of added time. But do a better job with the lineup to win in 90.

In terms of the lineup, I think defensively we were fine. We got beat on a ball against the run of play. Mena was shaky at times but Gomez and Martinez looked decent and Johansen made every save he had to and realistically could. #StartEirik Offensively, we weren't creating or finishing our chances. THIS HAS BEEN THE PROBLEM THE WHOLE SEASON. Putting the guys that don't consistently play you think will make a difference?

Vieira wasted an international spot on Iraola who made no appearance in the match and likely wasn't going to. Put Villa in that place. He's played multiple matches in a week from turf then grass and made contributions to the team's effort (Portland 90 minutes then Toronto off the bench). Yes, Mena needed to be subbed off but you can do a double switch for Harrison too. Someone else is going to get injured? Maybe. Take the risk, be coach, have some balls.

But if continually Vieira "claims" to put out a starting 11 and a bench that he believes can win every game we play then it's a more systemic problem and falls on Reyna and those who build this roster. NYCFC doesn't have the players, starting, bench, or depth to win the games it plays on a game by game basis. This is still largely a Kreis based roster with patches to fit Vieira's system. We started the year in that WM 3-2-2-3 then shifted to Vieira's favored 4-3-3 with a triangle midfield. Bravo was the guy at the point of the upside down triangle. He's injured. Iraola fills his place, a traditional RB. Lampard and Pirlo occupy the same position in the midfield really and we're playing another guy $800,000 with that same spot too. If Vieira started with us from 2013 I think things would be inherently different. And I truly can't fathom why CFG didn't pluck Vieira a year earlier to do it. You want a coach who won an MLS Cup to come to NYCFC and do the same thing. What is even remotely similar to the RSL style to NYCFC? And how does NYCFC even remotely reflect the MLS way to doing business? We're as MLS as Swansea City playing in the English Premier League.

If we make the playoffs, great. But if we don't, and I think we won't again this year, then we should fire Vieira to be consistent. But we can't (CFG) and won't (CFG) because Vieira hasn't had the time to build his roster and team. I'd like to see him spend the remaining 2.5 years he has with us. Get DPs and GAM/TAM players that fit his system that work on a YS field and a regular sized field.

We're not a football club, we're a makeshift band of players trying to compete and couldn't even beat a 2nd tier club (albeit one of the better ones) today. We don't have a home. We don't have an identity. What honestly works?

But I'll still root, pray, and hope for a win every fucking time even though it's killing me.
