Makes me question why Dome came to New York City. Managers want to play their style and if they can't play their style, they usually don't take the job. He knew about the schedule and the player quality and acquisition mechanism before coming in, but he still took it. The pineapple would never hit peak prettiness here.
When PV first came here, he talked about how NYC had to forge its own footballing identity. I think that's a pretty tasty managerial challenge.
Perhaps own identity when compared to the rest of MLS, but the company line has always been about playing the “City Way,” and it’s been heaped on tons that the CW is how first team will play and how the Academy is being developed - that specifically is why the overlords went with only a U14 team to start and purposefully pissed away u15-u19 talent in the area under the guise that they couldn’t learn the CW in such short time.
This is true, but I think we've discussed on these boards before about how the City Way may operate at a scope that doesn't preclude having our own identity.
For instance, it may simply require technically excellent and tactically proficient footballers. That would explain the desire to start at a lower age bracket. But doesn't preclude us from playing in a different way to Man City.
Some nuggets to start:

If they want to lay claim that the City Way encompasses excellent technique and tactics without spelling out a difinitive style, then that’s really no different than a company laying claim to business practices that encompass excellent fiscal responsibility and safety. They haven’t reinvented the wheel and they aren’t doing anything revolutionary or proprietary, it’s simply a marketing gimmick that any other club/company can roll out with their own fancy moniker; Barcelona has similar ideas, same as Dortmund, same as Liverpool - they all push exemplary technique and tactics. The flip on that is that RB has definitely pushed forth a true RB Way that their org plays with synergy throughout.
My company has fancy names for policies that are no different than the policies at my wife’s company save for the name they apply to it.
That's fair, but there's a lot of room between standard operating procedure (i.e. "excellent fiscal responsibility and safety") and absolute conformity at every tier (RB is a solid example).
Do RB really care about tactical intelligence, flexibility and technique? I'd argue that they don't. Am I happy that we do (if we do)? Absolutely.
In an effort to bring this tangent back to the original thread and avoid getting drawn into a side skirmish about CFG and conjecturing about the motivations for their past infractions, I'll re-quote the post I was originally responding to:
If we are genuinely trying to apply some of those basic principles of The City Way to something that reflects the identity of the city (lower case c) to produce interesting, winning soccer, then I will be satisfied. What's been quoted from the interview so far is compatible with that IMO.
Wingers might be it. I remember he identified wing play as one of the big differences between his preferred style and PV. He wanted wingers to provide width and fullbacks to play inverted, while PV had his wingers pinching in and fullbacks providing width.
Aside from the spine of Johnson, Callens, Chanot, Ring and Maxi, we could theoretically bring in new starting-level players at every other position. Though I think Sweat and Tinnerholm are probably our starting fullbacks next year. EDIT: I'm also getting a tingly feeling that Berget is our starting striker next year but he performs better than many expect, like a 15 goal/7 assist kind of season as a full-time starter. Leading us to a quiet 4th-5th place finish.
ITS remains my worry - he over-performed his xG by so much and plays inverted winger. I think his contributions next year will drop off significantly.

This is troubling on a few levels.....
1. If his heart is in Girona, then this current stop at NYCFC is just filler time to cut his teeth being a manager again.
2. My experience in the working world is when somebody references other opportunities they had when taking the current job, it’s a defense mechanism to prove their worth and desirability or as a CYA move that they didn’t have to take on this job but they did despite the pitfalls. Sometimes that info is already known, especially for “public” companies in the news or more specifically for coaches in sports, but when it isn’t known and is brought up after the fact by the individual, it’s suspect.
I don't know that he means we never play with inverted wingers. Man City play both ways. It would be nice to have the option, though.
I think ITS has the makings of a decent trad winger. But I agree that most of his goals came as an inverted winger. The one exception that I remember vividly was his goal against New England. To be fair, we didn't see a lot of him out there. We may see decent goal production and much better assist production.
I also think he has potential as one of the 10s, which is perhaps more similar to the inverted winger role with regard to the kinds of goal scoring opportunities he might see. I worry about his engine. Not so much his ability to retain the ball in traffic (my main concern with Medina).
I like him in the middle as well. I could see him playing alongside Berget in a 2-man front.
I don't like the idea of playing two 10s. In the 4-3-3 with our high press and win-the-ball back mentality, I believe we play much better with either [two 8s and one 6] or [one 10 and two 6s]. If Ring is a 6/8 and Maxi is a 10/8, that means we need a 6/8 CM to make things work. ITS is a 10.
Sands is a 6/8. Just saying...
sounds like interesting read. since its in spanish im sure i can pick things up that maybe lost in translation. plus sounds like he is more honest in that than when he gets interviewed here.
Those 2 sentences were a rollercoaster of emotions to read.

I'd be interested in why you think we'd only finish 4th or 5th if Berget starts up top and gets 15G/7A, because presumably it means we are able to add a DP at another position, while still having Maxi, Isi, Lewis, Medina, Ring, Taty etc.

That basically replaces Villa's contribution from this year, but Villa only played 23 games. And we limped to third place, would have been much worse under Torrent for the entire season.
If we have a couple other high profile hit signings, such as a CM and a winger, then yes we could push back to the top tier. But more likely, we'll be a tier two team with 2-3 other squads behind ATL and NYRB.
In general though, this discussion is way too premature.
Berget’s G/A replace Villa’s from this year and we were a very distant 3rd with the possibility of falling to 5th in the last day. ATL and RB will reload easily because the first is run by some savants that found a ridiculous Almiron replacement, and the second is a system machine of plug/play with a solid inventory of plugs. As long as Rooney holds firm, DC will be firing on all cylinders from Day 1 rather than wasting away the opening half of the season. That leaves 4th on up..... will our new DP be enough to push us higher if we’ve lost the bite of Herrera in the middle, no idea, but we’re likely gonna have to extend our GD to do it since we’re not upgrading our starting defense and we’re losing Herrera, so the only way to do that is with more goals from the hypothetical DP starter.
