What Are Your Thoughts on Torrent as NYCFC Head Coach?

Sorry for three posts in a row, but the other two were responses and this is going another direction....

Regardless of how we feel about Torrent now... If this hire doesn't go well, that will arguably be three bad hires in a row... 1) they themselves decided the Kreis hire was a failure, 2) regardless of PVs temporary regular season successes (counterbalanced by playoff failures, USOC failures and blow-out losses against NJ failures), him leaving mid season and mid contract, combined with those other failures mentioned, makes the hire a failure IMO, ... 3) if Torrent doesn't work out, that'll be the third.

So, if this hire doesn't work out, should Reyna be on the hot seat? I don't want to see anyone lose their job (and obviously this is all speculative anyway at this stage), but I'm genuinely curious to see the extent to which our FO has absolutely no accountability to anyone.

He doesn’t let the pressure get to him and that’s how he has helped Pep so much. And then during the matches, Domènec has a great vision of the game and a huge capacity to understand what’s going on in the pitch, how to quickly see what’s happening and what solutions the team has to do to come back with a result. . . .

He’s very similar to Pep. He’s very passionate, hard-working, and detail-oriented. He analyzes a lot of rival games to try to find even the smallest details. . . . He has a great understanding of the game and a great vision.

I'm so fucking excited.

I'm curious whether this guy has any charisma. Maybe Villa will do his talking for him. I couldn't dig up any video, but his quotes are so cautiously and carefully worded that I could imagine him as a Ranieri type, the tinkerer who minces around the corners of the locker room and quietly arranges to take the lads out for pizza when they win. The type who would actually stick around to take his team to Disney if he promised he would.

This is the only video I've seen of him (mute it, trust me). The contrast between Torrent's hands-in-pockets reserve and Pep's usual chihuahua on meth thing is pretty entertaining.

For now. My gut feeling is that this system only lasts as long as there's no reason for them to think it's not producing results. If the "production line" ends up in a manager in Manchester who clearly struggles and can't perform to the lofty standards established by Pep then I suspect that CFG may well end up recruiting an instant-results guy from outside the business to salvage things, and give up on recruiting managers from inside the business afterwards. They've already done a broadly similar thing with the academy when CFG's chairman admitted in an interview that MCFC's academy players were not really making it through to the first team because the gap in quality is too large, and are better served being sold on for transfer funds.

Hmm, so the motherships’ academy is not working. But instead of taking on kids & academies from day 1 that might have helped our team, we’ve built ours just like Manchester’s, starting diapers first and waiting. Just to have only kids drilled in the Ciy Way. Ain’t that a kick in the pants.

uh, you do know without CFG money nycfc does not exist right? so moves like this are going to be promoting from within or someone in their network. They tried a different direction with Kreis and you saw how bad that went. so if you want to stop supporting because we are a farm team, you might as well do it now. With this coach we are probably going to see more than one loan over from Man City.

sure atlanta did well....tata is hired and all their star players come in because they know / knew of tata. if and when he leaves we will see them bringing a big name that can pull people. but you really think any top coach after WC is just going to say hey yea ill got nycfc just like that? pretty sure they would get offers from europe or other NT first and consider those first. I dont know if Tata had offers or not but he had failed with barcelona and argentina and prob desperate to get back at it and saw atlanta gave cash and a project that he said sure why not. so we should try and get someone who fails in world cup with big team then. other coaches you allude to ( i think) are homegrown here, and we are years away from that i think if we want someone from our ranks to manager. Youth coaches also just started.

and a big name does not gurantee anything as mentioned in other posts lists of top managers and WC winners who failed in this league, granted some were from decades ago but still shows name guarantees nothing.

so yes i was serious when i said arena, he has succeeded in MLS- semi recently as well, coached in two WC's so looks like perfect person to guide this squad in MLS an independent team will for sure consider him even after the debacle for 2018.

In fairness, the first time CFG admitted it wasn't working was this summer. As recently as last year they were still trumpeting the "one new academy graduate in the first team each season, minimum" claim as their ambition. And indeed anyway, CFG are not saying that their academy style is failing - they are content that it is producing players good enough to be sold each year for 10-15m each, which I'm sure most here would love nycfc to achieve.

The issue in Manchester is that, as good as the academy is making kids, it's understood that the step up to play in a title-challenging English team is just too high to expect 1-2 players every year to manage it. What CFG want to do in England to fix this (and aren't allowed) is to run a B-team in the lower divisions as they do in Spain and Germany - if nycfc was ever intended on fulfilling this role (personally I'm not sure) then it certainly isn't now. The only way you could say that nycfc's academy is failing to learn any lessons from Manchester is not operating a B-team. I don't think the whole starting-the-academy-from-u13-only thing is really linked to this issue at all.
