Formation Speculation

-----------------Shelton
-----Villa--------------------Alvarez
----------------Lampard
-----------Pirlo----------Mix
Calle------------------------------Williams
--------Onyewu-----Hernandez
----------------Saunders

or

-----------------Shelton
-----Villa-----------------------Mix
----------------Lampard
------------Pirlo------AJ/Poku

Alternatively Nemec or Mullins up top.

Once Lampard and Pirlo join, would be interested in hearing people's thoughts on how/where they play?

Do we go 4-2-3-1?

----------Villa----------
Shelton-Lampard-Mix
--Pirlo--------Jacobson
Crappy Back Four
--------Saunders-------

Or how do these guys fit in a 4-4-2 Diamond?

Villa--------Nemec
------Lampard-----
Pirlo---------Mix
----Jacobson----
Crappy Back Four
------Saunders------

Yeah, pretty much. Somewhere between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. Lampard furthest forward of the MF 3 but not quite a no 10.

I like it, but I think Jacobson has proven himself a defensive stalwart. Jacobson in next to Pirlo and Mix wide right for Alvarez.

Also, love Villa as a winger. I think it creates more space for him. He's playing as a target man sometimes and that makes absolutely no sense. The guy is 5/7" with a 20 inch vertical. Just dumb. I understand the defensive responsibilities that come with playing as a LW/LM, but unless he is going to play as a 10 underneath Nemec/Mullins, I'd prefer to see him out wide where he can create space. Hell - would love to see him play wide right actually with a guy like as an 8 underneath him in a 4-2-3-1.

----------Nemec----------
Shelton--Lampard--Villa
Pirlo------------Diskerud
Crappy Back Four
---------Saunders-------

He has had a few good games, and a few bad. Stalwart is a strong word

I use stalwart because he has gotten better every game. Somes guys (Brovsky, Seba) haven't done much of anything. Others (Wingert, Saunders) have gotten worse. To me, Jacobson and Mullins have gotten stronger as the season has gone on.

I'll give you that they have improved.

If you look that was my 2nd suggestion

Bit harsh on Saunders that.

Or his CBs are that awful.

Maybe. Could be both though. Made a great save to keep the game a draw on Saturday. But he was way out of position. Took a bad line and a half decent player easily slots that past him.

(This post assumes the addition of Pirlo.)

A holding midfielder or deep-lying midfielder is NOT the same as a defensive midfielder. I wish Pirlo could play both roles, but my understanding is he doesn't provide much defensively, and definitely isn't mobile enough to help cover the backline by himself.

I also think people around here continue to underestimate the importance of Jacobson's role on the team so far. I'm not talking about amazing play from him, but merely the fact that Kreis literally has him playing deep enough to be classified as a 3rd CB. Unless our defense substantially improves, I don't think his role is going away, especially if we commit Calle to LB when healthy again, who will run forward a lot.

So starting there, I think we'll keep with our back four plus Jacobson in a defensive midfield role.

Next comes Pirlo and Lampard. Neither are mobile at this stage of their careers, so they will both play centrally and need runners around them. Lampard plays a bit better around the box that Pirlo does, so he could play above him if they're not on the same line.

(Side note: Best thing about the potential addition of Pirlo is that it frees Mix from the reserved or central midfield roles, which have really been dulling his impact.)

Last, we have three spots to fill out the attack. I think tactically, as Kjbert pointed out, we have learned that Villa is absolutely NOT a target man. He can play as a winger, a 10, or a secondary striker, but not up top by himself. This means that Nemec or Mullins needs to be on the field as the target man or holding striker. Nemec is like the Jacobson of the offense - he's not great, but his role is necessary and he's the best on the squad at it. The final spot in the lineup goes to Mix in a position to make runs for the midfield.

Formation on paper matters less than the roles described above, but you could write it down a couple of different ways:

4-2-2-2
Code:
---------------Villa--------Nemec---------------
------------------------------------------------
----------Mix--------------------Lampard--------
------------------------------------------------
---------------Pirlo------Jacobson--------------
------------------------------------------------
---Calle-------------------------------Brovsky--
--------------Wingert-----Hernandez-------------

4-2-3-1
Code:
---------------------Nemec----------------------
------------------------------------------------
------Villa---------Lampard----------Mix--------
------------------------------------------------
---------------Pirlo------Jacobson--------------
------------------------------------------------
---Calle-------------------------------Brovsky--
--------------Wingert-----Hernandez-------------

4-1-4-1
Code:
---------------------Nemec----------------------
------------------------------------------------
---Villa---------------------------------Mix----
--------------Lampard-------Pirlo---------------
------------------------------------------------
--------------------Jacobson--------------------
------------------------------------------------
---Calle-------------------------------Brovsky--
--------------Wingert-----Hernandez-------------

I personally like the 4-1-4-1 best, but again it doesn't matter much. All three of these formations allow our players to play the roles I described above.

As a last comment, looking at that formation I think it's very easy to identify our remaining needs. Jacobson, Wingert, Brovsky, and Nemec could all use upgrades. Kreis recently said they are looking to bring "a couple" people in this summer, I'm going to set their satisfactory targets at a DP3 (hopefully Pirlo) and replacing two of these other four weak spots.

I like both of those lineups a lot a lot, though I might throw Facey into Wingert's spot if he continues playing like he did on Saturday.

I think Facey is going back to Manchester soon. Either way, I just used Wingert and Brovsky as placeholders. I like Calle and Hernandez, but the other two spots I don't really care who we throw out there because we have no other talent.

Id do this...

Shelton------------Lampard---------------Mix
------------Pirlo-------------Poku---------------
Calle-------------------------------------Williams
----------Onyewu-----------John----------------
---------------------Saunders--------------------

but we all know kreis loves the 4-4-2 so….

As someone said a while ago, Williams may be done for good. He wasn't the same after the heart issue, and he had been AWOL since then, not even traveling with the team. He was in Ohio during the RSL game.

Villa has been awful as a target striker, Pirlo and Poku provide almost no defense from the defensive midfield spots, and both Williams and John are unlikely to play this year.

I could get behind a 4-2-3-1, but only with Villa on the wing and Jacobson as a DM.
