Formation Speculation

(ducking for cover)

Villa--------Nemec
--------Mix--------
Pirlo------Lampard
-----Jacobson----
Calle-Hernandez-Facey-Williams
-------Saunders-------

I like Villa playing behind Nemec, personally -- possibly even alongside Lampard.

--------------Nemec
---Villa------------------Lamps
--Shelton---Pirlo-----Mix
--Calle-------------------Jeb
---------Hern---Facey
------------Saunders

F Defense

4-3-3?

It's not necessarily about F Defense - part of defense is having possession and keeping possession. Jacobson, I think, has greatly improved on the ball. He makes smart passes, knows when to distribute, knows who to distribute to and has shown a flair for attacking up the field when he has an opportunity. I've been really impressed by him of late as he's gotten comfortable. Hard for your expensive offensive options to attack when they can't get the ball. I think Jacobson has shown a willingness to not only get dirty on defense but make smart decisions with the ball as well.

Villa has been awful as a target striker, Pirlo and Poku provide almost no defense from the defensive midfield spots, and both Williams and John are unlikely to play this year.

I could get behind a 4-2-3-1, but only with Villa on the wing and Jacobson as a DM.

My bad, I meant that would be my 11 when everyone is healthy five years from now.

Well, that was kinda my point, in that we'd be leaving out a true-ish defensive mid. But, if the team can rotate and have Mix/Shelton/Pirlo track back evenly, it might not be a bad idea. I'd rather give up a few goals to score a few goals than park the bus most of the season (though it seems to work for Chelsea).

The idea of Pirlo's long balls, along with Mix/Lampard feeding Lampard/Villa/Nemec would really flip our offense on its head at this point. You have to wonder if playing a better long ball -- which Pirlo could do -- is okay with Kreis, who's more into possession and shorter passing.

Fine with playing the better long ball - but Villa can't hold up play. That's become painfully obvious. Still means Nemec starts - which I like - but I know others don't.

I repeat:

4-2-3-1
Code:
--------------------Mullins---------------------
------------------------------------------------
------Villa---------Lampard----------Mix--------
------------------------------------------------
---------------Pirlo------Jacobson--------------
------------------------------------------------
---Calle-------------------------------Brovsky--
--------------Wingert-----Hernandez-------------

Let's get Mix some space.

(Although looks like Pirlo odds are below 50%. I'm just posting this again due to excitement over Mix's goal.)

Change Wingert to Facey and I'm on board. (I guess we used magic spray on Calle's hamstring?)

Kreis has expressed interest in keeping him but nothing has been announced yet. You're right that the current loan expires June 30, but I don't see a reason MCFC would need him back.

So we finally might have found our "A" defender and he might leave. You'd think MC would see he's starting to play well and leave him be.

The problem with Facey is he's now played a full season of football, if he plays another 6 months without rest he could suffer from burnout. That would be the only reason MCFC would take him back as they are currently stacked with quality young defenders (Denayer, Rekik, Mangala, Maffeo, Angelino...).

Facey will set an interesting precedent and it's important not only for us that he succeeds here, but for Man City as well.

If he succeeds here, CFG and Pellegrini should be more apt to loan other players.

The other thought is that CFG uses NYCFC as a soft placement for kids they like, but don't love. Maybe they want to maintain operation control of a kid like Facey, even if they aren't totally convinced he has a place ever in a first team sheet.

Dammit, the new chatter has got me excited again.

If everyone is healthy, we might have an actual team by the end of the season!

Did we play a 4-2-3-1 the other night? I think we did.

I believe that Mix and Jacobson played as an 8 and 6, respectively. Poku as a 10.

I have no clue what Poku's best position is, but I'm enjoying watching us find out now. It's obviously a more progressed up the field role. Not as a 6 or 8. And not as a LM or RM.

He's a Forward or a #10. Let's play him there.

Unfortunately no stats services do heat maps for US Open games, so I can't verify this, but it almost looked like a 4-1-4-1 to me, with a super fluid midfield four.

Jacobson was definitely hanging back, but the rest of the midfielders were all over the field. Mix could be found way out wide, in the middle, and up front a little. It felt like Poku was playing striker, but he tracked back a bit as well.

Maybe a 4-1-3-1-1?

Maybe the point is that Kries' system doesn't really care how you write them down. Super fluid in the middle of the pitch.

Poku needs to be a striker or a CAM, he's everything that we need going forward. He needs to be starting, but if his stamina is really still an issue, then play him for the first 60, and then when he comes back, bring on Khiry for the last 30 to use his blistering pace to run at tired defenses.
