Formation Speculation

Defense is the problem, I can't see them using a 4-3-3. We need more midfielders to help a weak defense.

I'd almost prefer a 4-2-3-1 at this point. But put Mix up not in the d-mid role.
That's what they did against red bull, and mix barely saw the ball. Maybe it would be different with poku back.

Id play poku over ballouchy in the formation above. Otherwise that's my lineup

Nah, our biggest weakness in the attack is building up any attack at all. Like Tom said, Mix barely touched the ball when he was forward. We simply cannot move him from the back because he's our only halfway decent distributor, and Jacobson is his partner to cover defensively. I don't think we'll see anything but a 4-2-x-x until we find a replacement for Mix or Jacobson that can distribute effectively. In fact, I think this is the only settled part of our formation, aside from Villa up top when healthy.

Poku has looked good in his runs with the ball, but he has not shown off distribution skills. I don't think he's an option to allow Mix to push up.

What Kreis needs to do is find the right guys or chemistry between guys to connect Mix to the strikers. Grabavoy, Velasquez, Ballouchy, etc. have all pretty much been failures. Shelton has had plenty of opportunity but definitely needs to hone his technical skills and vision a bit. I hope we try McNamara next, he's pretty much our last guy to get a chance at it.

I'm a fan of the 4-2-2-2 and just waiting for chemistry to develop, or until Lampard comes. But I could also see the benefits of moving to a Y midfield as mentioned earlier in this thread:

Code:
---------------Villa--------Nemec---------------
------------------------------------------------
--------Alvarez------------------Shelton--------
------------------------------------------------
----------------------Mix-----------------------
------------------------------------------------
--------------------Jacobson--------------------
---Calle--------------------------------Allen---
-------------Hernandez----W.Siriboe-------------

It's a subtle tweak of the 4-2-2-2, basically just telling Mix to move up the field anyway, defensive coverage be damned.

I would love to start Poku in midfield but he doesn't have enough positional discipline. That's why he's a perfect sub right now, he gives you a spark while limiting mistakes due to the short amount of minutes.

I'll take that risk. I can't think of a goal we've allowed that has been due to him getting out of position. He passed to Allen to start the goal against NJ

Might be better than having Jacobson in the midfield not doing much of anything to cover the backline. The problem is that we are just so weak at both FB spots. I'm not sure its really going to matter much.

What do you guys think about a 5 at the back formation to help us defensively? Not necessary?
I don't think it's the defense per se that needs help, it's the distribution from the defense that kills us. Turnovers from the cbs and Jacobson seem to set the other team up for an easy break while we are moving into attack mode. Probably demoralizes the rest of the guys who are running their asses off forward and back constantly. I don't think it's more defenders we need, it's better defenders. My solution on the roster is to try facey in wingert s spot

Our back line, when everyone is healthy, is effectively five guys: Calle-Wingert-Jacobson-Hernandez-Brovsky. (At least I think Brovsky is still first choice, that spot has been a revolving door lately.)

But you're right, distribution from those guys hasn't been good, though I think Hernandez is solid, and Calle was a breath of fresh air at LB. I'd play with the Wingert spot too, who doesn't seem to do anything particularly well except have a calm head. Facey hasn't looked great out their either, but he's worth a shot. I'd rather see KWS start again too, just to see more of him.

No easy solutions back there.

I remember Facey looking really good back there at CB in preseason. Very calm on the ball and had a good eye for the pass. Not having Calle is rough. I really hope we get him back this week. I agree on the formation too, I wish Jacobson was better passing out of the back. At this point I wish we had Nemec back to hit it to him and bypass that problem area.

Just because it's fun, how's this for a possession formation with Pirlo?

Code:
---------------------Villa----------------------
------------------------------------------------
-------Mix--------------------------Shelton-----
--------------Lampard-------Pirlo---------------
------------------------------------------------
--------------------Jacobson--------------------
---Calle-------------------------------Brovsky--
--------------Wingert-----Hernandez-------------

The idea with this formation is to have a super stout central midfield with tremendous distribution skills that don't need to run much, and then have two more mids (Mix and Shelton) that are told to just play super fluid and run all over the field. Calle in particular is also a willing runner forward. By telling five midfielders to cover defensively too, it will also help with defense and possession.

Alternatively, you could sub out Shelton and play Nemec up top as a target with Villa as the other runner in the midfield. I might actually like that better to have a true target man.

Code:
---------------------Nemec----------------------
------------------------------------------------
------Villa---------------------------Mix-------
--------------Lampard-------Pirlo---------------
------------------------------------------------
--------------------Jacobson--------------------
---Calle-------------------------------Brovsky--
--------------Wingert-----Hernandez-------------

Poku and Alvarez back up Lampard and Pirlo, while Mix and Shelton are backed up my Mac, Grabavoy, Seba, and Ballouchy.

I think with Pirlo and Lampard in the midfield, you can't rely on them to track back quick enough. Jacobson would have to be in the bottom of the diamond, with Lampard and Pirlo in the middle, and Mix on top.

But to play a "fluid" diamond, you need mobile players. Lampard and Pirlo are the opposite of mobile at their age. Hence my suggestion above that allows them to generally sit in the middle of the pitch as deep-lying playmakers and have everyone else run around them.

I think this is very close to what it would be. I would guess Lampard and Mix switch. Lampard playing the 10 and Shelton/Mix doing a lot of running to help Pirlo cover at the back. This is essentially how Pirlo plays Juve now, he sits deep because that is where he does his best distribution and then Vidal and Poga track back to help cover on D. I think Lampard still has plenty to contribute but I dont think he has the legs for that much running.
