Do they miss Ike Opara that much?
And Eric Palmer Brown?

It's so different than Sporting KC of the past few years, which had more quality center backs than they knew what to do with. They've still got Besler, but he is now 32. They brought in some Hungarian guy named Botund Barath, but he's not even a TAM player. Beyond those two???

For anyone caring to see the dimensions of the field or how beat up it gets tonight during the Liverpool vs. Sporting Lisbon match, it will be broadcast on TNT at 8 PM.

The video boards on the far side aren't on the field, so there's nothing between the benches and the field aside from the sideline paint. So the field looks like there's unused space, but the dimensions are exactly the same as NYCFC matches. And the pitching mound is still present.

The grounds crew will need to do a great job over the next two days, especially on the covered infield.

They're using the blue, white, and orange nets and goalposts sticks for this match as they do the NYCFC matches. Corner flags are non-NYCFC.

Aside from a concert in 2016, this will be the first time in NYCFC history that there's a non-Yankees event on the grass during the course of the season.

Usually when there's an NYCFC double game week the field is much better for the second game than it was for the first time. (Case in point, Portland a few weeks ago). So I'd think that having this game on the field today might actually make the field better than it otherwise might have been on Friday.

He hasn’t had the opportunity to pad his stats against the team the makes all GKs look stellar.....

Us....
This made me look at very high level stats of shots, shots on goal, goals scored for all clubs across MLS and led to something kind of interesting.

In Shots per Game, NYCFC is 4th in the league at 14.78 (LAFC is #1 at 18.333)
In Shots on Goal per Game, NYCFC is 3rd at 5.63 (LAFC is #1 at 6.80)
In Shot on Goal % (SOG/S), NYCFC is 3rd at 38.08% (TFC is #1 at 39.45% and LAFC is #4 at 37.14%)
In Goals per SOG %, NYCFC is 17th at 30.84% (Minnesota is #1 at 45.78% and LAFC is #2 at 38.46%)

I know this is super high level, and hardly scientific, but a few interesting things to point out from this.
  • There may be something to your point above about "having the opportunity to pad stats against us". While we still are at the upper end of the league in terms of scoring goals each game, goalkeepers playing against us also save a lot of our shots.
  • NYCFC appears to have a proficient offense in terms of taking shots, putting shots on frame, and scoring (all per game), but is near the bottom at converting shots on goal into actual goals.
  • Not that this is much of a shocker, but LAFC is killing it everywhere
  • Minnesota has a wildly high conversion rate of goals to shots on goal. Over halfway through the season (so, a decent sample size) and almost 46% of their shots on target are scored, whereas second place is at 38.46%. That's quite a gap between #1 and #2
