The Red Bulls have, historically had MLS lifers on their team. Dax is a long-time Red Bull, but also played for a five other MLS teams. Sacha played for four MLS teams, and only 3 years with the Red Bulls. BWP was in the league forever and had appearances with 2 other teams.
How many American soccer players -- English-speaking players -- are there who played recently in the league, want to be on TV, and are notable enough names to get people interested in listening what they have to say?
Apple/MLS is clearly targeting players who played in MLS for a long time. Take NYCFC -- how many of our players all-time are notable enough MLS lifers to be on these broadcasts? We almost exclusively don't use MLS lifers. The only non-goalies who comes to mind are Chris Wingert or Jason Kreis. Kreis currently works for RSL, and who knows if Wingert wants to be on TV. Does Frederic Brillant want to be on TV when he retires? Does he speak good enough English that he can do it? Maxime Chanot wants to coach, I think, so he's out. Does anyone care what Josh Saunders thinks?
When he retires, I can absolutely see Sean Johnson joining the coverage. He seems like the kind of guy who would enjoy being a TV commentator. I think he'd be good at it -- he certainly has the pipes. He's one of the very few MLS lifers we've had in our history.
