Too much bad blood. Even if he were the right fit for us (and I don't think he is), I just could never warm to him.
Said every sports fan ever confronted with the recruitment of a hated rival player or coach prior to said sports fan cheering wildly just days/weeks/months later when hated rival player or coach started producing for new team.

I don't think we would be hiring Jim Curtin to run a 4-4-2 diamond. I think we would be hiring him to work with our young players, develop them, and play the CFG way. The question is whether Curtin can play our way.
Exactly. My only point is, we could set up that way. I can see the Parks/Perea/Sands midfield with Santi at the point of the diamond, and Alonso and either Bakrar or Wolf, or maybe even Malachi, up top. Back line of O'Toole, Haak, Martins and either Mitja or Tayvon. That would win some games.

It would also leave Trapito, Jovan and Julian Fernandez on the bench for another season. I don't see that happening, at least with David Lee still in charge. We've all talked about the possibility Nick lost his job specifically for not playing those guys enough.

So, I have no doubt, if it's Curtin, he'll have to adjust.

I have the sneaking suspicion the Powers That Be want to keep this an all-CFG production, though. Carlos Vicens would be the guy if that's true. It would mean some growing pains, but better to get it over with early in 2025 and get the young guns out there shootin' than let it drag on any longer.

There's more than a little truth in that. "He may be a sonofabitch, but he's OUR sonofabitch now."

And hey, Curtin is unquestionably a top-rank MLS head coach with a proven record of sustained success. The man knows what he's doing. And since I for one don't know the inner workings of the Union all that well, I'm willing to grant the possibility he could come over, finally have the freedom to let his freak flag fly and end up being the guy we've needed.

If that happens, I'll be cheering as hard as anyone.

[EDIT: But I'll never love him. ;) ]

Also, didn't we read when he was fired that Curtin's 4-4-2 diamond was because that's what the Union organization wanted? Curtin strikes me as a pragmatic coach -- will he change his system based on the roster he has?

I don't know the answer to these questions, but he dragged some very average Philly teams across the line over the years. I could definitely get behind the idea.

Curtin has shown himself to be tactically flexible during his time with the Union. He likes the go full park the bus mode more that I would like but either last season or the season before when their offense was clicking he really opened things up and let them play.

He's proven he can win in the MLS with a much lower-budget roster than ours and he's not a CFG yes man so I'd be excited to see what he could do with us.

2021 curtin: DAMN OIL MONEY!
2024 curtin (potentially): DAMN!!! Oil moneyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

We all remember that quote but it's not an isolated incident. Curtin speaks his mind at press conferences. During his time with the union, he called out his own players, refs, and front-office decisions. He might play nice for a while after getting the job, but if he doesn't like the players CFG/Lee are giving him, he's going to call them out. It could get real interesting if the results aren't there.

if curtin gets hired does that mean he sold his soul for a chance to coach big money players? I don't see CFG allowing their employees to bad mouth them. Calling out players is one thing, but i don't see CFG being ok with calling out Lee, the club or the ownership.

My guess is that CFG thinks of themselves as far superior to the Union ownership and assumed Curtin won't have a reason to call them out. This might be the case as the majority of Curtin's complaints with the union were the lack of spending. Where it could still get interesting is with the prospects. If Jovan is out of shape or the coaching staff expects him to buy into the system and he's not doing so, Curtin is far more likely to be publically vocal about it than Cushing ever was. Maybe CFG wont care but I could see them being touchy about him trashing their assets and a guy their scouting network clearly regarded highly.

Des Buckingham sacked by Oxford United. Will be interesting to see if he gets linked to our job.

Definitely an interesting profile, but I get the sense from the fact he left Mumbai when he was so successful that he wants to be in Europe. Would he be more like Ronny Deila, who always had his eyes on returning to Europe? Maybe we can have success with him for a year or two, but I don't get the sense he's sticking around for a long time and I'm kind of sick of rotating managers every 2 years or fewer when we always struggle with a new manager and it takes half a season to get into rhythm. It worked with Ronny where he won MLS Cup before he left and maybe it would work with Des, but that's a risk.

We are about to hire our 6th coach in our 11th MLS season -- my preference is for a coach who wants to be here long-term. It's why I'm intrigued by Gio Savarese.
