NYCFC sign new forward Sean Okoli!

Could be a crazy tin-foil hat theory but could it be possible we pick up a guy like this and leave him unprotected in the draft so that the other two teams will pick him up cause we either don't want him/ he's not our guy and we get to potentially keep the rest of our roster? And if he's not chosen we get to keep a nice back up/bench guy around that may not be our first choice but still does a job. I may be a little to cynical with this theory

i dont think so...why go thru all of this and make a video about him etc if you are going to let him go. I know Minnesota was allegedly interested but not sure how true that was.

So wait, we are going to go through the trouble of signing a guy just to leave him unprotected in the draft so that a team will pick our new signee and not another guy that we couldn't protect in the draft? Wouldn't it just be easier to make a side deal with the team not to pick the actual guy that we want to keep?

This is exactly the kind of guy we want: cap-friendly, young, fast, USL MVP & Golden Boot winner, US U-17/20 national team player..... what more could we ask for out of a domestic player??? He already has more value for our roster than some of our fringe players we exercised options on.

I've always thought we should grab the best USL player each year to bolster our depth, I'm glad Reyna got the memo. Now that it's the off-season, I'm going to have to go back to meeting them for coffee and cronuts each morning so I can bounce my ideas off them.

Hmm. A lot of people would say that if you could turn a journeyman CB and international roster spot into a forward who averages more than .5 goals per 90 at 1/3 the price, you're a pretty solid gm.

I ain't saying. I'm just saying.

Are you saying that Max Chanot is a journeyman CB? Can you be a journeyman at just 26 years old? The guys is also a full international. We must have different definitions of journeyman. By your definition, Omar Gonzales is a journeyman.

Very true. Assume he makes $100k. He gets a living stipend on top of that. Probably lives here in Westchester County near the training facility
They get a housing allowance? Makes sense considering that league minimum is not a liveable wage.
I've never heard any report that players get any type of non-salary living allowance/stipend, and if they do, i've never heard of anything region specific where NYCFC players get more than RSL players.
Has there been any credible reports/rumors of this? To the best of my knowledge it does not exist.

I think it applies for all non-DPs but I also believe that Steven Gerrard was given a housing bonus as part of his contract with LAG.

We have no depth with scorers. Especially with FF gone. It's Villa then everyone else. Hopefully one of our forwards steps up to be that #2 this season. It's a positive signing.

Not a straight replacement for Mendoza, but would be interested to see what type of pace this kid has and if we change formations from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-4 or 3-3-4. Not expecting this kid to start, but they went out and got him for a reason.

I fixed it for you. But like I said there, the point remains. We'd be happy as hell if we were on the receiving end as well.

I think it's extremely positive to expect him to be at the level of Mullins. Maybe he'll be a better fit or something, but that's tbd, of course.

Patrick Mullins played very well after the trade. It was obvious that he was never going to be an offensive weapon for us as long as David Villa was healthy. Thus, he was spare parts. We turned an asset that someone else needed into an asset that we needed (Chanot). I wish Mullins the best. He was just never going to feature for us. I'm sure this new kid, Okoli, has a trait that Mullins didn't have - either the ability to play from the wing or the pace to chase a game like one of our CFs does (Mendoza or Taylor last year).

From what I'm reading of the guy, he's very much a CF rather than a winger. He poaches more than he creates. But I'm not expert on him of course.

Interesting then that they would go get a Target Man. Maybe they are looking at their roster and what went wrong at the end of the season and decided a change was necessary. I think Reyna/Vieira deserve our faith on this one. Again, I don't anticipate this kid starting, but maybe I am wrong and this is a big acquisition for them. Maybe Villa told them he wanted a strike partner and this is the guy for now.

Villa and Pirlo will definitely get more days off next year, I think. "Rotating the squad" is one of the concrete things Vieira has said he would like to do more of in the future. And after Mullins was traded, I don't think we had any other true CF on the roster.

In other words, I think Okoli will be a direct Villa backup, and maybe play along side him occasionally. His ceiling is probably like a Dominique Badji - a bench striker with a good mix of starts and subs.

I asked a knowledgable poster on bigsoccer about him earlier today when I first saw the news, here's what he said:

"Decent size but not a target player"

I'm pointing this out so we don't all have expectations that are off-base.

Thank you. Would you say that Mullins was a target player? I think he was. Just trying to create a baseline on a guy that I've never seen. Lots of guys don't know how to use their size. Shelton is one who uses his size poorly.

Unless Villa moved left a target player wouldn't work anyway. Though I do think we need size. The top changes when Khiry would enter a game. He's not as tall, but it will be nice having another 6'+ option.
