NYCFC sign new forward Sean Okoli!

Or they go with two men up front
I've always liked two forwards floating side to side - makes it very tough on the central defenders marking them when they don't know which is dropping for the ball, or running diagonal, breaking in for a through ball, or switching up. So if this new guy isn't a target forward but he can run off the ball with some continuity with Villa, it could be a nice pairing to keep Villa from having to post-up on the CBs.

I'll admit I don't understand the nuances of 3 forwards in the 433, and how they are supposed to move and fill voids, but it really feels like the basketball play where the players spread the court to isolate 1v1.

Good post. With the two men up front, movement is absolute necessity. Remember that Villa thrived next to Diego Costa (who wouldn't?) and likes playing with another CF. Villa moves great without the ball, minus the offside calls.

4-3-3 works like you said, plus a little more.

It does give wingers an opportunity to go 1v1. Either go to goal, dump or get it in the box basically. If you watch how Ronaldo does it when playing the wing...he's goes into isolation, once the opponent commits to a dbl team, he dumps off to Marcelo and heads to the box. I cite them, because they do it perfectly. So your anology is spot on. Just like basketball. 1v1 or give and goes mostly. Ronald would make a really good left wing. He checks the boxes.

Also it gives midfielders an opportunity to dump the ball into the corners spreading the field, knowing you'll have a winger there to retrieve.

I personally think our field is too small for a 4-3-3. Just because it exposes our midfield and the counter happens so quick on a small field. We are really playing with 3 forwards though and not real winger play since they have to play so narrow.

I'd like a 2 forward set as well. Smaller crafty guy like Villa and a strong finisher up top would work well for us. We wouldn't give up much as far as scoring production goes, but it will definitely improve our midfield defense and possession.

We don't play a traditional 4-3-3 though. It's more like a 2-7-1. Our wingers are box-to-box and switch fields at times. It's more about team spacing and fluidity than width and structure.

It was more like a 3-4-2-1 with Iraola sitting back....but it changes throughout the game, so it doesn't really matter. It's just a base anyways.

I would expect he plays wide mainly as if he is only a ST he would barely get any minutes. He seems to be quick and hard working and i would expect him to be similar to Khiry rather than Mullins. What will be crucial for him is how well he adapts his game as i doubt PV would go with 2 up front as a base formation.
At the moment he would play ST if Villa is out although that could change depending on who else we bring in.
