Nycfc V Montreal Motm And Post-game

Couldn't agree more with Paul.
Was a Smash and grab and I'm so relieved at our ability to bounce back. Thought there'd only be one winner once they tied it not being us.

Villa is a different class not just to the rest of our team but to 99 percent of the league. Facey is a special defender and lol at the people who wanted him shipped straight back to Manchester earlier in the season. Saunders is quite good at what we need him to do. He might not be the long term answer but bitching about him right now just seems ridiculous.

Vital 3 points in the last game being played by what can be termed NYCFC version 1.0. I expect to be better the second half of the year with the reinforcements in place.
Oh captain,
My captain,

Show us where anyone wanted Facey sent back to MC?

He was utterly poor at FB early in the year. After the positional change and getting settled in, he's gotten nothing but praise.

Yes when Kreis played him out of position and when he got the red card there were a lot of people upset that he was what we got loaned from Manchester. I'm not digging though the archives to find examples but I clearly remember it happening. Not singling anyone out or pointing fingers at you ...

Point all you want. If I said it, it won't be the first or last time I'm wrong.

Fuck it.

Leaving Stade Saputo with three points and a belly full of poutine.

So delicious, those three points.

When we got a free kick late, I turned to my girlfriend and said "We're due for a set piece goal."

Bang. El Guaje. Victory for the good guys.

ALLEZ LES SKY BLUES!
Know what those 3 points taste like?

FREEDOM. THAT'S WHAT.

You know what? I will take it!!!! Of course I will, and so will you! What is that you will take? How about another road win and 3 points? YESSSS, sign me up you say? You got it. Listen, was it pretty? No! Was it effective, depends on what you mean effective. If getting three points is effective then yes! It was!

First let me go ahead and say it. MOTM = Josh Saunders

The guy stood on his head the whole game, not only making great saves to bail the defense out but the way he was challenging the ball on corners, and over the top balls (i.e. save on Duka in the first half), the guy has been very stable for us the whole year, with the exception of a game or two, understandable given the backline in front of him. Josh Saunders has proven me wrong. I thought he was at best a backup GK in this league, but clearly he is showing to be much more so far this year. Keep it up Josh!

Now here are my bullet points:

  • Kudos to the following players, not named Josh Saunders.
  1. Facey - the young kid is really proving himself in this physical league. He was confident and was a force in the middle of the field. Even when he got beat once or twice, he had the speed and athleticism to get back and disrupt to prevent an easy shot on goal.
  2. Poku - Once again, the kid was BOSS in the upper midfield. The kid is so comfortable with the ball at his feet, and he is so strong, he just needs to grow more in his role as an attacking player and he will be a dangerous dangerous player for us. Whenever Poku had the ball, my heart was at ease. Whenever Tommy Mac and Jacobsen had the ball and tried to push the ball up, my heart was bleeding. Poku will be KEY for us moving forward.
  3. David Villa - 2 goals
  4. KWS - He really had a good game. I was worried when I saw that Hernandez was not playing, I said oh Snappity Snaps, we IZ in Trouble Dawg fo real....but KSW came through and showed me something tonight. He was physical, he got in the line of shooting and deflecting many balls (he he) and was just a big presence in the middle. Big ups to KWS.

  • The following schleps didn't show me much again SMH
  1. Tommy Mac - I mean listen, he sometimes shows some great moments for us but for someone that is supposed to be offensive minded, the kid needs to get better and just making the smart pass, the smart play, and be more comfortable with his distribution. On top of the that, he has VERY VERY SLOW legs/feet on defense, he wasn't helping much on the flanks and trust me RJ Allen and Wingert, needed all of the help they can get. More on this below. Not to mention the boneheaded PK. Like dude, your in the box, you have your arms reaching for the opposing player as he is playing the ball, only bad things can happen from there. If not the ball hitting your hand, you grab the opposing player, the player takes a dive, and voila easy PK call. Again slow feet, he had to reach.
  2. Jacobsen - Again playing as a CDM, he is OK I guess at the backend but boy oh boy, each game I watch this guy play, he absolutely has no clue on offense and how to distribute the ball. Really looking for to not having this schlep play for us major minutes, I hope that day comes, he has showed me absolutely nothing this year. When Pirlo comes, he will sit in this role in front of the backline and Jacobsen will be reduced to the bench.....one can only hope.
  3. RJ Allen and Chris Wingert - It is no secret, you attack NYCFC on the flanks and eventually NYCFC will crack and a goal or two will go in. It just so happens that Saunders was standing on his head the whole game. RJ Alen and Chris Wingert, OMG......talk about guys that keep getting burned because they just do not have the skill and athleticism (too slow) to keep up with the traffic. You saw it in the RedBull game and you saw it here tonight. Attack the flanks because our LB and RB are non-existent, and voila, you will get good chances. I can't stress this enough, I really can't wait for Iraola to come and take up one of the flanks and not have to see Wingert anymore. I think it is safe to say we may have seen the last of Brovsky getting any meaningful minutes, and let's hope Wingert's minutes are heading down the same path. Allen I can deal with for a bit more because he provides some quality service and runs up his offensive flank but Wingert, no just no, seen enough, move on.
  4. Speaking of former RSL guys that seriously need to see the exit door hit them in the ass, our friend Ned. Number, #, numero, number (canadian) 11, eleven, once, eleven eh (canadian)...any coincidence MTL scored when this schlep came on? No I don't think so. By the way, why the F*&K is JK subbing Ballouchy so early AGAIN?????? I don't understand that. But seriously Ned needs to sit his ass down. He brings absolutely NOTHING, nada, 0, zilch, NOTHING Eh (canadian) to the table.....errr pitch. be gone!!!!!!
Listen, in all seriousness, this was a great win. We didn't play particularly well but 3 points on the road, you take them anyway you can. After the horrendous start to the year, to have this many points and, notice, in the east, teams 2 through 8 are so close to each other, anything can happen and there is a lot of the MLS season still go. I am pleased, I am excited to see our squad bring in some truly talented individuals in some key positions that we desperately need. Great win!

Don't think you're entitled to your own thread. This should go in the Post-Match discussion thread.

great to come out of that game with the three points and a great response to last weekends result. Not the greatest performance but it was enough now we have got to the transfer window right in the mix for a playoff spot. Thats probably more than what we could have expected after the first five or six games. The two new full backs and Lampard will certainly improve the side instantly. Hopefully another CB and Pirlo to follow in another game or two. All we have to do is grab one of those playoff spots then you would never know.
Watching other games today proves that most teams are about the same level. Seattle DC and LA seem to be that level above but after that there is no real consistently good side.

We needed these points in a bad way. Nice bounce back win.

Saunders: HUGE, unfortunately couldn't stop that PK, but otherwise a solid performance. Season high eight saves. Just look at this chart. Our shots are light blue...

Villa: I need to stop caring what he does when he doesn't score (i.e. look pissed), because when he does, it's terrific.
Facey: A huge game and a great defensive performance as always.
Watson-Siriboe: Surprisingly stepped it up today with a decent performance and no fuck ups.
T-Mac: An unfortunate handball; Should have passed to Mullins instead of going to for it...will make less of those mistakes with time (he's only a sophomore in the league).
Poku: Too much swagger, didn't need to pick up that yellow card. MLS refs need to understand how large of an athlete he is and how he plays his body.

We didn't have a lot of opportunities, only 5 shots and 45% possession. But when he had them, they were good chances. Defense and midfield are definitely lacking without Mix and the other players who aren't on the field/will be coming soon. A win is a win, and I'll gladly take these three points. Can't wait for more depth from Iraola, Lampard, Angelino & Co.
