Hollup, we bought him out for 1,000,000+ Euros? damn, that's actually really cool if that's the case.

It is. It's another example of how CFG really does want to win here -- maybe they don't understand the growth of this league and are going about it the wrong way, but they want to be successful here and will spend what it takes to do so.

I'm reading an article about him from a few years ago by Sky Sports. His goal is to become a Premier League manager.

I think that's why he's interested in our job -- if he does well here, whenever Pep leaves he hopes he will be set up to climb the ladder to Manchester. Smart career move by him to come into CFG with Pep maybe a few years from leaving Man City.
Oh good. Another midseason quitter coming on board.

Everyone would though. Thats how it works.

The stats on MLS teams losing coaches who quit midseason are:

NYCFC 2
Red Bulls 1
Rest of MLS combined 0

It's not how it works.
It's possible I'm missing somebody somewhere but it's absolutely not the norm, except for the teams owned by foreign soccer conglomerates.

The thing I don't like is he clearly now has a history of leaving teams in the middle of a season if he sees a better opportunity. I do not want a Ronny Deila in 2022 redux, but this guy will absolutely leave us high and dry if something better opens up.

i dont think this happens unless he does well here. Ronny left after winning MLS Cup. nothing before hand. He doesnt have the name like PV did either.

I absolutely think he's coming here because he thinks it puts him in line to be a potential Pep replacement in Manchester. If he's successful here, I'd be surprised if he was still our coach when we open the stadium in 2027.

They continue to be overly frugal with our Designated Player (DP) spots compared to other ambitious clubs in the league.

Your point about the league's growth is absolutely spot on. While they want to win, they seem to believe they can do so while engaging in strategies that prioritize the broader interests of the CFG at our expense. For instance, sticking us with a DP center back to offload him from a sister club or signing players like Jovan, who clearly don't align with our style of play.

Achieving sustained success in MLS requires full commitment. The league's structure, with its emphasis on parity, demands that every roster mechanism be maximized to its fullest potential. Anything less than that won't cut it if they truly want to compete at the highest level.

Exactly this. Our needs are much greater than a manager. Even more so pre stadium opening when the plan may be to just go through the motions until it’s time to roll out the new stadium roster. (Though it would make sense to do this as soon as they start selling seats).

I think it's as simple as they are misjudging the growth of the league. I think they're a couple years behind where the league is. Ever since putting the 2021 core together between 2016-18, they've made some strategic mistakes that indicate a lack of understanding of how quickly MLS is improving.

I also disagree with the idea that they're being frugal with DP spots. I think they're spending lots of money, they're just spending it on the wrong types of players. They think young guys with limited experience can come into MLS and dominate, but that's not the way the league is at this stage.

So to recap, Brad Sims said he wanted the new coach hired by Christmas in order to ensure he could get here in time for training camp. Now it appears they have made the signing six days later, and it would appear to have been complicated by having to buy him out of his Hungarian club. Pretty good piece of business by the club to get this done just over a month after firing Cushing.

That play style seems right up our alley and exactly what we're looking for. Full acks getting heavily involved has been a staple of our attack for years now.

I'll say this, I do like that our play style doesn't change with the coach. I do like that we hire a coach who fits our style, not the other way around.

So much of the discourse about our coaches focuses on offense: use of fullbacks, inverted winger play, even the discussion of our press is mostly about whether and how we use it to generate offense. But I want to look at defense. Here is average xGA per game.

Vieira inherited a defensive disaster and dropped xGA by 0.3 per game two years in a row. It inched up a bit his last half season, and I believe he was distracted. I also believe part of Dome's 2018 tinkering was getting the defense back to where it could be. I don't really have a theory for 2019. But then look at what Deila did. My goodness Ronny, 2021 was amazing. That defense was a major reason that those of us who never wanted Ronny fired supported him during the offensive slump. Mid 2022, everyone noticed that we eased up on pressing when Nick took over. In 2023 he went all in on defense when he had a pathetic, punchless roster. In his last year he openly stated he sold out the defense to help an improved but still thin offense.

I don't have a preferred strategy. I do want a coach -- and a roster -- who can get the opposing xGA down below 1.25 per game while still generating offense and so doesn't need Freese to carry the team. Defense can be sustained with discipline, smart play, and effort. It should be susceptible to fewer slumps. Get that in order first.
