New Jersey RB look good in this light.

Without Villa, we look just like NJ. Add in a couple more Maxis to replace Villa and we’re Philly. Why won’t we spend?

Results of last week's matchups:

SATURDAY 7/21:
DC 1 @ ATL 3
NE 0 @ NJ 2
ORL 2 @ CLB 3
DAL 1 @ HOU 1
MTL 2 @ POR 2

Atlanta is back on top of the table with their win at home vs DCU. But we now have 2 matches in hand and are 2 points back. Not a bad position to be in for a team averaging 1.8 ppg over the last 2 seasons. NJ's win at home brought them a little closer to us, but they are still 9 points back with only 1 match in hand. They need help to catch us and with 15 matches left in the 2 year campaign, time is ticking. Columbus got a BS win vs Orlando, but they are still 10 points back and we have 2 matches in hand, in the word of Michael Stipe "I am not afraid." Dallas dropped points with a draw at home to Houston, 12 points behind us with no matches in hand. With 14 matches remaining, they's need to average almost 2.8 ppg to catch us if we keep our pace. And lastly Portland, the team with all those matches in hand. Well they just lost one of them with a draw at Montreal, they're now down to 3 matches in hand on us and are 14 points back. This is quickly turning into a 2 horse race with NJ a couple posts back, but keeping pace. I'll keep the table as is for now, but we might want to start dropping the dead weight in a few weeks to reflect the reality on the ground.

This week's matchups:

WEDNESDAY 7/25:
NJ @ DCU 8:00

THURSDAY 7/26:
NYC @ ORL 8:00

FRIDAY 7/27:
Orange Is the New Black Season 6

SATURDAY 7/28:
ATL @ MTL 7:00
NJ @ CLB 7:00
FCD @ SKC 8:30
HOU @ POR 9:00

SUNDAY 7/29:
NYC @ SEA 5:00

We go from losing a match last week to gaining one on all the teams except for NJ, who also has a double match week this week. We're away for both, so let's hope Dome has figured this out, and hopefully we have all our pieces healthy for these 2. NJ is alway away for both, at DCU's new Audi Arena & then away to Columbus where they get all the calls. Atlanta has to go to Montreal where not only is there delicious poutine, but Portland was only able to draw there last week. Dallas has a tough one at SKC where they'd don't lose very often (unless they play NYC!). And Portland host Houston and they better not drop any more points on their quest to average 2.8 ppg. Enjoy folks!

To be fair, if you compare that list of spending against the current table the correlation between the two appears to approach zero.

We are 4pts back of ATL.

At this point, as long as Atlanta wins the Supporters Shield, we only need to keep pace with them, correct? Or as long as Atlanta and whoever else wins the Supporters Shield wins MLS Cup, we qualify?

So it's really a 3 horse race for 3 spots if you include Dallas from the West?

Nope. SS doesn’t get you the CCL this season. Not winning the other conference either. These are the spots up for grabs:

2017 USOC - SKC (qualified)
2018 USOC - LAFC, HOU, PHI, CHI

2017-2018 combined record - ATL, NYC, NJ

2018 - MLS Cup - ? (If SKC, or 2018 USOC winnner, or 2017-2018 combined record holder wins, then 2nd place for 2017-2018 combined recoded will get CCL berth*)

*I’m assuming it will go to 2nd place for CCL standings, knowing USSF & Concacaf, it could be a game of horseshoes...

Thinking about this, I would be very happy to have ATL win the shield/CCL spot and have us win MLS Cup. Not just for the sake of winning the trophy, but to have the league's two best teams representing MLS throughout North America. I hope both of us make it.

If we win both, ATL probably qualifies anyway as 2nd place on CCL standings.

If Redbulls under Armas stabalize, there's still a very good chance RB can overtake ATL there. However, they're looking iffy and I have a feeling they're about to start dropping some games very soon, so it won't matter to ATL much.

So basically:
1. If we win the SS, we qualify (by being above ATL)
2. If we don't get SS but win MLS Cup, we qualify.
3. If we we are either above, tied, or 1 point above ATL, we qualify.
4. ATL or SKC or (this year's USOC) win MLS cup, we qualify.
Good summary.

For #4, you have to add if a Canadian team wins MLS Cup - unlikely as that may seem at the moment.

Update after the mid-week results. By wining at Orlando we've leapfrogged Atlanta again, and are now 1 point up and with a match in hand going into the weekend. NJ's win at DC helped them keep the pace at 9 points back with a match in hand on us. We once again are in first place and control our own destiny in the CCL. Also, another clean sheet means we are quietly closing in on the best GAA in the league over the last 2 years, wonder what the haters will say about that?

Atlanta and NJ both have tough road matches coming up tomorrow. Let's see where we stand going into Sunday at Seattle without Ring and possibly Maxi as well. Fuck you Orlando, you dirty SOBs.
