Sean Johnson [Goalkeeper]

With Guzan retiring, I wonder if Johnson goes home to Atlanta?

From the accounts at the time, Sean was told by Atlanta that he was going home to be their day 1 starter when Chicago traded. There were even rumblings that Chicago's primary reason for agreeing to the trade was to help Sean get home. Then, Guzan became available, and Atlanta pulled the rug out from under Sean and sent him to NYCFC.

I wouldn't blame Sean if he still holds a grudge against Atlanta over how it went down.

What's his value now? I'm sure he's not interested in coming here and sitting behind Freese, but if we can assume that Matt will be transferred after the World Cup, it would be nice to have a starting caliber keeper ready to take over and save our season.

D.C. United.

I, for one, really feel for Johnson. DC is making some moves so maybe they'll be OK this year but that's back-to-back bottomfeeder teams, and you'd think at this stage of his career he'd want to try to chase a Cup. He's still good enough to be the guy on a contending team, not sure why this is the right place for him.

I bet that he's chasing a paycheck and going to the highest bidder (which was reportedly why he left NYCFC to go to Toronto). Can't say I blame him. MLS salaries are not generational wealth like they are in other sports. He got his cup. The smart move is to bank as much as possible before it's time to hang it up.

This sounds right to me: have gloves, will travel.

To be fair to Sean, when he went to Toronto, it was not clear that they’d be as bad as they were. They were one season into the rebuild around Bernadeschi and Insigne and two seasons from finishing 2nd in the Supporters’ Shield.

Now, of course, they’ve been actively bad for a while, so even going to DC might be a step up.

FWIW I believe Barraza was cut loose by DCU when their season ended.
Sad.

I liked Barraza, but to be honest I think Romero is better than he ever was as a second goalkeeper. If Freese does leave after the world cup, I think Romero could be a decent replacement.
