Stadium Discussion

Serious question - Anyone know why we didn't go for a design that allows for closing the roof (i.e. cold-weather games/bad weather games)? Cost-related? aesthetics-related?

So obviously the scale isn't right because of the size of the venue, but a retractable roof would have substantially increased the cost of Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. We also have a smallish footprint to work with, and the retractable roof has to go somewhere and has to take up space. It's only a 13-acre plot of land, which is pretty small to also have a retractable roof.

That's also a good point. But don't they usually slide into the roof area?

my guess is pure cost. the additional cost for all the material, engineering, and machinery to have a retractable roof probably adds a whole lot to the total cost of the stadium when we really don't need it considering when MLS plays and even if it switches to a fall/winter schedule, it should still be ok here in NY.

you can tell how soft that ground is with the number of piles they need to support the structure. definitely flood plain.
Absolutely! To my knowledge that entire area is a flood plain.

I know when Shea Stadium opened up all those years ago they had a flood in the basement and I'm almost positive that area in the park where a stadium was once proposed is also prone to flooding.

was actually having a hopeful thought right now. red bull arena is nearing 20 years old at the moment. it is true that it's still in great condition and has aged tremendously, but it is a reality that the stadium will need major renovations at some point in the near future. i think we're looking at a potentially hilarious universe where the red bulls play some games in our stadium.

I was just thinking this the other day! It would absolutely be hilarious

My word. I remember that stadium being "60-90 days" from even being announced for like 5 years. Now it's almost 20 years old? Wow I'm getting up there
