So apparently someone's (wiki)leaked a bunch of correspondence from the UAE royal family/government, and we're in there:

( mgarbowski mgarbowski, it's definitely not just you - it look about 10 minutes for the embedded tweet to load for me this time)

Wow. My take: they purposefully didn't rush to find a stadium location the last few years as they waited for NYCFC to become a 'legitimate' NYC franchise. Now we are somewhat engrained in the sports culture, and WP/WPW kind of fell in their laps. The Islanders, who are more engrained passes on WP/WPW, and they are the NYC franchise next in line to take the location. Pols even now mention them as the top prospect for the site without any work on the Club's part campaigning for it. They actually played it pretty well.

Those leaked emails are pretty fascinating.

The FMCP site seemed to be where the focus was.

They also expected a 3 year timeline to be playing in a temporary stadium.........

Either way, it definetly didnt go as planned.

This is less directly stadium related, but is, um, interesting.

Very, very interesting. Also goes to show that every step this organization is taking is very well thought out. I kind of selfishly hope that once stadium construction is underway we see more leaks like this because I would be very, very interested to see what else has gone on behind the scenes.

I also find it quite interesting how they were completely ready to handle (or at least preparing to) any backlash behind Abu Dhabi ownership. I may have missed some, but I've seen little to no opposition to this outside of I think one blog post and a few random fans here and there.

Interesting, but hardly unsurprising. Honestly sounds like a well thought out forum post around here.

As others said, the notable part for me is their hyper awareness of their public imagine, both in relation to how it could hurt/help the stadium effort.

I think these leaked emails paint them in a good light, actually. Realistic and professional.

They originally wanted to play at the Metz. I joke about spelling, but this a professional email from one sports franchise discussing playing in another and they don't even know their name.

Also, with all their original intent focused on FM, WP becoming an option puts them right back to their original business model of where to have the stadium location.

I'm calling an announcement of WP/WPW before 2018. Who's taking the over?

@GothamGator IDK. I just don't see it.

The fact that they were smart enough to know that they couldn't not build a stadium without community support and have implemented a long term strategy to build community support is a very savvy NYC political move. We are dialing up a win-win, where we are adding value to the community AND eventually getting our stadium instead of just trying to brute force everything with oil sheikh money that could fail because a council person or a community board.

NickFromAstoria NickFromAstoria Willets Point is different than the original Flushing Meadow proposal because we are using zero parkland. Even parkland for parkland swaps usually result in the community getting screwed.

Well, it depends on what part of Willet's you're talking about. The west side is technically parkland, even though no one in their right mind would actually call that parking lot a park. (If you look at the city's DoITT map, you'll see where the official boundaries are.) The east side isn't legally part of the park, and is largely owned by the city now, so building there wouldn't need Albany's approval. So in a sense we have three different categories here: 1. Parkland that's really parkland, which was part of the original plan to build on the Fountain of the Planets; 2. Parkland that's really not parkland in the colloquial sense, i.e. the parking lot west of CitiField; 3. the Iron Triangle itself, which isn't parkland at all, but is now partially owned by the city in the hopes of one day building affordable housing there.

One thing to remember about "Willets Point West" - i.e. the CitiField Parking Lots. Yes, there may need to be some state approval to use that property, but more importantly, it is 100% totally controlled by the Wilpons. Nothing will be built there unless they want it to be built there.

Yeah, I think it does. They knew that the perception of Abu Dhabi/UAE here in the states includes concerns on the AD/UAE positions on those items.

Those notes there are pointing out some of the potential community/media pushback on the ownership group due to their stances/viewpoints on those items.

There's nothing negative there, only awareness from the group.

Maybe the "z" was extra and they were looking to play at the Met.
