I'm not a city planner so who knows if it's possible.

This seems like such a pipe dream. To expect NYCFC to end up in Willets East / Iron Triangle just seems so far fetched.

To the contrary, I've always thought we'd end up in the Citi Field parking lot/Willets Point area. It just makes way too much sense, and is some of the only open land near public transport in the entire city. If we're building, it's either next to Yankee Stadium or next to Citi Field.

KEY PORTION

Notably not part of the plan: the mall. Instead of pursuing remnants of the old plan, the de Blasio administration will convene a task force with Melinda Katz, the Queens borough president, and Francisco Moya, the local City Council member, to fashion a framework for developing the remaining 17 acres at the site, which is also known as the Iron Triangle.

Both Moya and Katz are proponents of a soccer stadium. Yankee Stadium is smaller than 17 acres.

Let's not forget this picture from her state of the borough address:

Someone drew this up and it looks very similar to the rendering we saw of the stadium over Newtown Creek.

Correct me if I am wrong, but that is built over the Iron Triangle I believe

What do we know about Willets Point Blvd?

EDIT: Editing my own post. Willets Point Blvd there is barely paved. There's nothing there. I don't see why the road couldn't be eliminated. From the rendering, the stadium would border Roosevelt Ave and 126th St.

Here's the original plan. They were always going to change the roads. So that doesn't matter.

So realistically, let's say this project gets all approvals within the year and construction begins next spring (2019) on the stadium. We talking about playing in a new stadium by 2021?

I love visiting these forums for fresh stadium rumors.

But allowing Melinda Katz to figure out what to do about a clean 17 acres.
Just waiting on this announcement from the team now:)

If by “construction” you mean remediation of the site to comply with the NYC Dept of Environmental Protection, then yes, “Construction” could begin in 2019. It could even potentially begin in 2018 since remediation would be the same whether a stadium or housing or parkland - remove all the toxic soil.

It’s hard to say when the first foundation/piling could be poured/sunk- that’s tied to how polluted the site is and how advanced the design team is with the construction documents.
