The Next Manager Thread

Shocked at how few rumors there have been over the next NYCFC coach. Brad Sims said he wanted the new coach hired by Christmas, which means we have one week left to meet that deadline.

No rumors, leaks, whispers every offseason. It’s one of the most frustrating parts of following this team
Not really. The organization is pretty good about messaging discipline, but most rumors, about NYC or other teams, come from outside: agents, half-wit journalists trying to get noticed, etc, and we have had our share. We see plenty of player rumors, including many that never panned out and others that signed a week or 4 later.
The Deila search saw us linked with both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Arteta, and maybe others before Ronny was hired.

I agree that this coaching search is oddly devoid of almost any speculation or rumors. Like you said later the Curtin thing was fleeting and there's been nothing else that I have seen.

But also I don't really want rumors. The Torrent to Deila gap was long and frustrating and the GVB/Arteta drama did not make it easier to wait through. If we had been linked with 3-4 candidates for the last month but still no news, would we feel any better? What is frustrating to me is the organization rarely seems to have a plan. Vieira was named soon after Kreis was sacked and they haven't done anything similar since. Torrent took weeks in midseason even though he was in-house and Vieira was clearly looking to leave for months. Deila took a long time. Cushing was named as an interim even though everything pointed to him having been the obvious in-place reserve option and again, Deila had been rumored to leave for weeks. Given our history of constant managing turnover including 3 coaches quitting - twice in midseason -we really should have a plan in place all the time with a readiness to extend interview invites to 4-5 candidates at any time.

All very fair points, and agree about the lack of coaching plans. I think it’s just a personal preference for me. I would enjoy reading the odd coaching or transfer rumor in the offseason. I think there are less about our club than others. Just a preference and an opinion. No right answer

A thread for the next manager. Rumors, discussion, the actual announcement, and then more discussion.

Looks like Des Buckingham is the frontrunner after he left Oxford United (Currently 20th in the Championship, but led to promotion last year).

I've been reading up on him. Impressive record. I'm not sure why Oxford United let him go, although the statement from their chairman reads a lot like David Lee's statement about Nick:

Apparently, the supporters were not happy about Oxford letting Buckingham go. I've seen that mentioned in a couple places, and Ferguson's statement alludes to their restlessness as well.

Ronny Deila is reportedly the favorite to take over in Atlanta.

Would we like to bring him back? I think I would -- he had us playing some really nice stuff before he left.

I think it would be better to move on. He played nice at the end, but there was also a long period where we _didn't_ play well...

Let's get some new blood in, preferably someone who will stick with us through 2027, at least. The raw materials are there (at least we hope that's the case). I want a manager who is going to take this squad, mold it, turn it loose and win some silverware.

We clearly fired Nick because he wasn't the right guy for the job. Let's get the right guy.

Puzzling situation unless expectations are astronomical. Ronny was hired 4 months ago and fired today.

They won 5 of their 10 games, lost 2 for 1.8 PPG. Fourth place nine points back of first to a club with 9 wins and 1 loss.

it is very strange indeed. i would think he pissed off the ownership somehow and had nothing to do with his performance as a coach.

Is it troubling that Dome Torrent, Vieira, and now Deila all seem to want no part of a return to CFG, or at least NYCFC? Hopefully it's just universal or superficial stuff, such as the North American travel times, MLS rules quirks, etc. rather than something deep or systemic about us...

While I know Torrent did express some frustration after he left, the other really haven't to my knowledge.
They both used their success here to get higher level jobs in Europe. It's very unusual to come back to an old club (unless their is a personal connection like hometown) and despite being such a large organization, there aren't many landing spots for an ex-manager in the organization. Unless they want to shift into scouting or sporting director type roles, or maybe an assistant in Manchester.

Of course it's just my opinion, but I'm pretty sure guys are paying attention and realize the direction this club has gone the past few years.

Deila will go to Atlanta. He'll ask for a 9. Arthur Blank will open up the checkbook and bring in an established player who will step right into the Starting XI and contribute.

Deila will come to the Bronx. He'll ask for a 9. CFG will open up the checkbook and bring in the star player of Lithuania's U19 mens Olympic team.

They each quit on us abruptly with time on their contract to move on to better things. Since then they’ve each been fired 2-3 times with an average tenure of 1-1.5 years with no cups or hardware I’m aware of. To come back here is to seemingly admit they made a big mistake leaving. To go anywhere else in CFG except MCFC is saying I can only succeed in their umbrella.
So no, I don’t think it says anything about NYC or CFG. They still are looking to prove themselves.
