World Cup 2026

Ok. This is totally random. But you make this comment about the Scotland match. In the early years of eBay they ran a commercial (tried to find it but couldn't) that opens on a couple. The husband is setting up an auction to sell an ugly green lamp I think. The wife behind him says, "Do you really think anyone is going to want that ugly thing?" The scene switches to a guy in front of his computer clicking Buy on the lamp and pans out to show that the entire room is filled to brimming with all things in the color green. It closes back on a close in shot of his face, tear trickling down his cheek, and he says - in a Scottish accent - "It's a thing of beauty."

Ever since then I've only been able to hear that phrase in a Scottish accent.

I feel like the nature of this post really better belongs in the stadium thread. But whaddyagonedo?
I remember that ad. Well, I had never thought of it for years but your description revived the memory.

what did it say? looks like its been deleted

Timeline.🔴13 Nov - Ronaldo gets red card in Portugal’s game v ireland. (Should miss opening 2 games of World Cup.)
🟠18 Nov - Ronaldo meets Donald Trump at White House.
🟢25 Nov - FIFA clears Ronaldo to play in World Cup from start.

With a follow-up tweet:

Had a call from a senior football official and his view on this ruling by FIFA to ensure Ronaldo gets to play at the World Cup: “Unprecedented.”Was a different precedent last year when somehow qualification rules emerged to ensure FIFA’s Club World Cup had a Lionel Messi team in it.

That's all from Tariq Panja, a NYT sportswriter. The inference, which probably has at least some merit, is that Ronaldo being a Trump supporter with Infantino earned him special privileges.

i think technically it would of been the opener missed since there was one more WCQ after his red so that would of counted as one. still, even without the trump visit something would of been made up to clear him imo.

The decision was terrible and inappropriate. Still, I don’t get the suggestion that meeting with Trump had anything to done with it. Trump probably doesn’t even know who Ronaldo is.

He knows him. His son is a big fan. Even had him over for dinner days before this suspension announcement.

Happy draw day.

Last time around I had just started a new job and followed the draw during a meeting, trying to use it to build camaraderie with some new colleagues, most of whom turned out to be more interested in cricket. I didn't end up lasting long there (for unrelated reasons).

This time, I'm waiting to be laid off from a job that has been mostly fine but is deeply impacted by all the shit the federal government has been doing this year. Hopefully the Yanks fare better this time around.

Sorry to hear about your job situation. That sounds terrible, just waiting for layoff news.

I've given up on both the broadcast and the live updates on NYT/The Athletic. I'll look at the groups when the bullshit is over.

Never thought I would be this unexcited about a world cup in the US, amazing.

The only interesting thing in the entire NYT live feed:

I went home for lunch and watched the actual draw on a South African broadcast. I think USA have a doable group. Afraid how much Trump is going to be all over everything in the summer.
