Lampard To Nycfc

Guys I think Lampard can more than cut it in the MLS. I don't even see how there could be an argument against it. I think he can give us 2 solid years.

I don't think the argument was ever that he would not be up to MLS standard. More about whether his current abilities were the best use of a DP slot.

Graham Zusi is a DP now. I like Graham Zusi, but I think (for better or worse) there is more to being a DP here at NYCFC than sheer performance and ability.

If the Torres news is true, then that's all you need to know.

Why not having gone after Ba and Et'O who were ahead of him on the depth chart?

I actually do not rate Zusi that highly (in world football, not MLS, mind) but he does make more sense as a DP from an ability, fit, and marketing standpoint. I do like Besler and was happy to see Sporting keep hold of him, as well.

I think Lampard will be a very good MLS midfielder, if he can stay fit, but he isn't exactly a marquee in the US and he will not likely be the revelation on pitch that Dempsey and Henry are for Seattle and RBNY.

Most of us in the dissent just feel there are potentially better uses of a DP salary. But we are speaking from an outsider perspective so perhaps this was the best we could do right now.

Ba would have been a waste (and unlikely given Turkish interest and money) but Eto'o is not a bad shout, though, he looks to be going back to Italy.

Let's forget about Lampard for a moment. I do however agree that he isn't the draw that a Dempsey or Henry is. You could say the same for Villa even though he is more decorated.

Ba was a free. Et'o is a free. Drogba is a free. Yet we're bidding 30M US for Torres? I would imagine his real price will be more in line with the 15M US Athleti bid. But there are better options for less. If CFG is actually comfortable in spending 15M or us US for a player - bid for Jozy or Brooks or Wilfried Bony or Chicarito. All players rated around 20M Euro or less.

Ba, Eto'o, and Drogba were on significant wages and have other inkind offers from teams playing in the Champions league. Bony is a hot property and would never come to MLS right now when he has the opportunity to go to a big European club and make quite a lot of money for himself and his agent in the process. Hernandez would be a waste (even if he would tap the Mexican market) as I do not believe he would provide good ROI.

I think Altidore ultimately will be a top-level MLS striker, has US recognition, and is finding the bigger leagues in Europe to be less appealing every year. Not to mention having Villa beside you is a mouthwatering opportunity. It may be just the right move for him from a sporting, financial, and branding point of view.

I am on record as an admirer of Brooks but I just don't see him leaving Germany while his stock is rising. And I'm not sure CFG would be willing to commit the resources on a centreback, as others have pointed out.

Just one mans thoughts, of course.

Who cares about their wages? Lampard is getting 7 Million a year. You can't use the wage excuse as a reason why they don't pursue those three on a free when Lampard is getting. 7 Mil

I was less referring to NYCFC's ability to pay similar wages and more about those players wanting to get a "last" paycheck (or in the case of Drogba and Eto'o the last, last paycheck) and some glory.

But, to argue that point, anyway, there is a limit, even with DP salaries not counting against the cap.

I've seen both Lampard and Drogba recently. Drogba is worth more

I agree (remember, I think there are several better choices that could have been made). But would he come? Or could we do it having just laid out quite a bit of money for Villa and Lampard?

Then again, what do I know? ;)

Anyone who thinks I'm alone in my perception of this being a big mis-step should go check out the impartial opinions of folks at Big Soccer.

It's almost unanimously viewed as a move reminiscent of failed signings from years past.

The money won't matter. But the perception (eta) of signing washed up players and the impact to quality of play will matter oh so much to our club's on field and (eta) fanbase building success.

Note: I edited this post in an attempt to improve its clarity. Limited success, I'd say.

It seems there are quite a few of us on here that are uneasy with the signing so I'm not sure further evidence is necessary.

In fact, I think the movement is growing.

I would be happy rather than disappointed. If that's hilarious, then may hilarity ensue.

Dude, you have an unhealthy obsession with hating on Lampard. Get over it. He's now part of the team and we need to support it. The freakin' guy is a legend in the UK. We will get at least 2 great years out of him.

I don't need to support it. If supporters don't hold the club accountable, then who does?

I'm a consumer, as we all are. If the product doesn't meet my expectations, I can and will voice my displeasure.

This move just screams mistake in so many ways.
