I'm thinking the players are probably more excited about going to UAE than California. They'll be in Cali and Florida later.

I agree, I've been pretty down on the FO and the politics of it are shady but assuming everything about the trip is first class all the way its an experience for the players and can be pitched in future recruiting. No other MLS teams offer this experience. I'd rather they keep doing an MCFC training as that likely means more to the players but this is a nice experience as well.
It's far too cold to have preseason here in New York -- I'm completely fine with them going south for preseason, but it's pretty weird to be in the UAE.

If we have any later signings from from overseas, would training in the UAE allow them to train with the club while Visa stuff is worked out? I know that has been a hindrance in the past when signing new guys, but I'll admit I am not too familiar with the rules on this

Yes, this has been a problem in the past. Players would have need to receive a proper visa before partaking in team activities, and more importantly arriving in the country.
Which is why I've said that training overseas is better to integrate new players quicker.
Clubs have indoor facilities all over Europe for the winter.
Although many do a week or two abroad to start the year and around the holidays.

To the extent it helps, fine, but it's actually a pretty small window to take advantage of. The press release about the training in Florida indicates the team starts there on Feb 12. Look back at FootyLovin's chart http://nycfcforums.com/index.php?threads/2019-roster-discussion.6429/page-66#post-269701 and it appears we sign 1-5 guys annually (with a rough average of 3) in that period or just before it and would likely miss the UAE training and still be delayed for Florida training.
Fair but everyone in mls is employed by mls. Not their clubs.
Right. So MLS/NYCFC can't hire them until there's a visa, but that doesn't stop CFG from offering them a 2-week contract to train in the UAE.
The real issue with them training in the UAE before being officially employed by MLS/NYC is injury risk.

Wait, so you guys are saying NYCFC could have a player sign a contract with CFG instead of MLS. Do you think they would announce it as if they signed with MLS/NYCFC? Nah, that’s crazy talk.
Also, since we’re delving into Lampardgate territory, it brings up that FIFA rule that a player can sign with 3 different teams over 1 season. But only play for 2 in that same season.
