The right sub was pirlo for Herrera and don't look back. That friendly was the best our midfield has ever looked. Pirlo is cooked, sorry to say. He looks like a shell of the shell he was when he came here
Wouldn't be NYCFC without a multimillion dollar sinkhole of a player out there dicking up the flow.

I'm all for Maxi, or really anybody else, taking the dead ball kicks. Pirlo hasn't really delivered in that department, save for the funky set play type free kick and those require so many more variables clicking that they can't be attributed to his brilliance.
Please. We know what Villa can do even with MLS balls. And Maxi was a free kick specialist in Italy and is obviously not very useful screening the goalie on set pieces. Use Pirlo as a decoy or the receiver on the occasional pinball trick play.

That's pretty shitty that the president didn't mingle in the president's suite for even 15min.
Yeah. My wife is even more annoyed than I am, and she could not care less about talking to Jon Patricof. But that's just not done and she can't abide that. The rep who emailed me to tell me I won and worked all the arrangements even asked me to write a short email about why I became a city member and my favorite team moments etc because supposedly he likes to prep for these chats, and I did, and there was just no follow through. She came by late in the game and asked if he came by and when we said no she seemed surprised/miffed. She was working elsewhere during the game; I think she wrangled the kids who accompanied the players on the field for example, and I wonder if one of the other people there was supposed to make sure the meet happened. But ultimately it's on him. He came in a room he hosted with maybe 4 groups of people in it and met with one of them and left. I've seen him work a room in public and he knows how to do it so this was a surprise.
What kind of food did they provide?
Pizza, chicken fingers, hotdogs, pulled pork, mac'n'cheese, various slaws and dips, chips, cheese, water soft drinks and Heineken.
Was the view ok, or were you too far away?
Perfectly satisfactory.

Were you able to get any info out of the concierge staff working the room? Surely there had to be some folks of reasonably high stature/position?
No. I didn't really know who anyone was, except a couple of sales reps I've run into before and they either don't know or have the least discretion to say anything. Looking at the front office list and remembering names, a lot of them weren't even listed. The highest ranking person I met and recognize on the list is a Partnership Sales Executive, which I presume means a sponsor rep. But I had no idea who she was at the time and I didn't pump any of them for info. I did have a couple of Qs prepped for JP if that happened.

I've never seen the stadium so empty for an NYCFC game. The weather really did deter a lot of people from coming. I got friend to come along and it was his first experience at a soccer game and at Yankee Stadium so I was explaining the overall mechanics of the game and the team itself so I was a bit distracted.

Maxi shouldn't have missed that chance he had. He looked like he got a little too excited with all the space he had and he knew it.

Again more questionable reffing especially in the second half with Chanot. He's a target for a guy his size and there were some missed cards to be called. The crowd really a bit let down.

Subbing TMAC in was kind of pointless.

A decent result but we should have won this. Hoping the next game is warmer. I can't take sitting in the cold anymore unless we score goals.

Yeah, you should totally get something out of them dropping the ball. Hard to complain about a "lottery", but they didn't really provide the prize they advertised. I'd be annoyed. Probably moreso than you. I might have drank all their shitty Heineken and pissed in their cole slaw.

That game leaves me high on frustration but low on concern.
Yes. Annoyed as hell we have a 5-2 GF/GA and are 1-1-1. Annoyed as hell we can't ever get off to a quick start to the season. But overall we look fine. Last week our finishing was clinical or lucky depending on your views. This week the opposite. We should be fine, but I'd really hate to waste a lot of early home games again.

Uggggggh, we should have won that 4-1, or at least 3-1, if we'd had better finishing. Great to see us create so many real chances, but what a bummer to be let down by the finish.

I can't take sitting in the cold anymore unless we score goals.

I also have never seen the stadium so empty. When I got to the 200-side concourse, there was no one there about 20 minutes before game time. There was no beer line!

I've also had it with sitting in the freezing cold. This game felt even colder than last week. It was right up there with that 1-0 loss to SKC two years ago where it also had light snow.

Better be warmer in 2 weeks for the next home game. It also sucks that NYCFC will always have a ton of March games due to sharing Yankee Stadium. Ugh.

Anybody know the NYCFC expected goals from this one? Against DCU it was something like 1.5, would be curious if it was the same for this game.

You could say the same thing if you are an optimist - Harrison and/or Villa finish their chances in the first and Moralez in the second and NYCFC is up 3-0 by the 65th minute again.

Or if you are a pessimist, the finishing was abnormally good against DCU and this was more the norm and it's not good enough.

Win against the Quakes and they are pretty much on track - drop points there though and it's another slow start, wasting more home games early on.

1. That's a bit too forgiving. He was no better than a Jacobsen today.

2. What? It was fucking freezing and sleeting on everyone. I completely don't buy that it's the crowd's fault or responsibility to do anything. How are those of us who showed up at fault because we got a hard luck draw?

3. Yes, we looked superior to Montreal in all facets. Our defense wasn't bad at all.
Sorry, misinterpretation / miscommunication on the crowd note. I meant that the size of the crowd was poor and wasn't trying to criticize the people who turned up. More dismayed about the people who didn't.

Agree to disagree about Pirlo, and I'm optimistic about Herrera.

Big Picture -- 3 Games and each game we have had (at least) twice as many scoring chances as our opponents and have 5 goals in 3 games. We do that all season and it is going to be a great season.

I missed the opener so this was the first chance I had to really see our defense. I love Callens and I love what he has added to our team. Between the speed and the excellent ball control and passing he beefs up our line. Our defense looks like an average (maybe even slightly above?) MLS defense. After allowing the most goals and the 3rd most goals in MLS, if we allow an average number of goals we will have a great season.

Should we have 7 or 9 points after 3 games instead of 4? Of course we should, but this is a better team than last season and I haven't seen any reason to think we won't have a better season than we did last season.

Well, when I saw him on the elevator on the way out I said "I hate you Jon Patricof" and just as the doors opened I knocked his hat off and ran away.

President's Suite Report:
It's a great deal, especially since I only put in 1-2 entries every game that they offer it so it cost me very little.
But, it's clearly not the Real President's Suite. it's maybe his second suite. It's a basic 16 person suite, and everyone there was a guest of somebody or an employee given a perk or an employee sort-of working. There were a couple of families, someone who was a friend of an employee visiting from Indiana, a club employee who transferred from Manchester 2 weeks ago, etc. It's pretty obviously not where Patricoff hosts real VIP guests.
Which is not to be dismissive of it. It seemed like 17 club employees came and introduced themselves to me and my wife and a few of them said "oh, you're the Cityzen's winner." They all made it clear we could call on them for anything during the afternoon. Plus there was a hospitality/Legends employee who kept all the food in order and refreshed supplies, etc. And it was damn nice to be indoors. There were 2 rows of seats just outside the suite available, but with the weather most everyone stayed inside except some kids who went out because they're kids.
I never spoke to Patricof, and I'm pretty sure someone screwed up. He did come by before the game. I got there one hour early, at 1pm because I knew I would get at most a few minutes with him and I wanted to give him every opportunity at his convenience. It turned out we were the first people there. Anyway, he came by some time between 1:30 and 1:45 and went up to this one family who he seemed to know. He spoke to them for 3-5 minutes, and I figured he was going to do a circuit of the room, and by this time at least 2 employees had identified me as the sweepstakes winner. So I turned to be ready for him to approach us when he finished with that family, and he said goodbye to them and walked straight out the door. I never saw him again until we left and were on the same elevator with him.
That really sucks. I always assumed that sweepstake gives you one on one time with him for the duration of the game. Apparently it just gives you two free suite tickets.
