2021 Roster Discussion

CFG wants us to be a team where they develop talent and move it to Man City or sell for a profit. That means a strong academy and bringing young players in from across the Americas. Older, more established players are going to be less common. The Villa, Pirlo, Lampard signings were to make a splash and are unlikely to be repeated, absent something exceptional.

I disagree. The one Gud quality he has shown so far is that left foot of his. He's always been able to whip in very dangerous crosses from the left side with great pace, it doesn't surprise me that he would have a decent enough left foot for FKs.

He was one of the top picks to take corners last year from Ronnie when he wanted an outswinging corner from the left side. The only two individuals who took outswinging corners from the left last season were Matarrita and Gudi (ITS took only 1) and when both Mata and Gudi were on the field at the same time, it was usually Gudi that took it.

That's a fair assessment. But that requires gudi on the field. And as a lwb, I have very little faith in his defending ability vs a fast and talented winger. His left foot isn't good enough to make up his lack of pace.

Maybe if he starts playing elsewhere... But with our midfield packed, that seems unlikely too

I always figured the club/players unofficially retired the number because of the role Villa filled with the club. But after everything that has happened, I appreciate that someone new will wear it and take the awkwardness away.

There will still be more Villa 7 jerseys worn to games than Morales 7 jerseys.

true, but is 7 really the next go to number for his position? thats a winger number. and it goes back to him probably saying: screw it ill take 7 since its next available number.

or kitman was probably like.. "listen - we thought we were going to sign some wingers but we didn't. so i've got a whole lot of 7s and nothing else."

Whyi s everyone calling this guy a forward? everything about his positions online says "winger" to me and nothing at all CF/ST. I know Taty is like that now but not every winger is a striker?

I don't think you could have either of them for a similar price. Of course they would be much better signings for a "win-now" club in MLS, and that is disappointing for us. But all 3 are playing in the EPL right now, none in a club likely to be relegated, and both Walcott and Welbeck have annual salaries of more than 4 million US$ and Rodriguez more than 3 million US$. Those salaries were agreed on years ago in what was likely to be the last fat contract for any of them, but it is still debatable how much salary they would command in MLS. All are over 30, and in the case of Walcott and Welbeck injury prone. They may be available for free at the end of their deals (or not, Southampton apparently wants to keep Walcott, who is on loan from Everton), but their salaries would made them over-30 DPs.

The guys CFG is reported to have gotten from Uruguay and Brazil are 23 and 20 y.o. and cost reportedly 3.5 million and 1.2 million in transfer. Both will be on TAM level salaries or less (I'm guessing Rodriguez will have to be a DP because of the transfer cost, although I don't know how that works when it is a loan and not a transfer to NYCFC)

So it's really IMHO an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Those clubs would gladly have you take those players off their hands. Just pay the wages.

Thiago Andrade had 9 first team appearances last season - including 7 starts. He scored one goal and had one assist. These games were mostly played in Jan-Feb of this year, even though they were for the 2020 season.

The 2021 season hasn't yet started in Brazil.
