COVID-19 - Leagues Suspended

Plus, the Covid situation gets wrapped up in it. For example, at one point the players were hoping to have a little less economic pain now and spread some of it to future years. So, that brings the Covid negotiations into the CBA & vice versa because the new CBA needs to reflect that change.

the biggest concern i read is related to the revenue sharing from potential new TV deal. the MLS wants to share less so thats why they have this stand off. since that potentially goes for years of not getting that money until new cba

It’ll be tough for them to regain interest to the level we were at late last season. We’re in full swing this time of the year and here we have one of the lowest points of interest I’ve ever seen in the clubs existence. It’s a race to see which league comes back first and MLS is losing that race.

I don't understand the MLS restart plan.

I get getting started in a neutral site to accelerate the return to play. What I don't get is doing so in a tournament - especially the tournament they seem to be favoring with just a few group stage games and a longer knockout phase.

With 3 group stage games and a 16-team knockout (4 rounds), the league would be limiting the number of real games being played (the group stage games count for the regular season). Also, with 10 teams being eliminated after the group stage, and another 8 in the first round of the knockout, we end up with 18 of 26 teams being sidelined for half the length of the tournament or more. These teams will spend a month getting ready to play, restart for 2-3 weeks, and then go home and not play for 2-3 weeks. It makes no sense.

If they want a tournament, they should expand the group stage and shrink the knockout stage. A 4-game group stage and 8 team knockout would have all teams playing at least 4 games and getting real time on the pitch.

I think this was forced by the players. There are multiple reports they did not like being alone without family in Orlando for an extended period. This plan gets -- as you note -- 18 teams home pretty early. You are correct that this set up makes no sense from a competition standpoint, but it is better for player morale.

NBA coming in too to the complex, need to clear out for them to come in.

Disney has ample hotel capacity and can easily accommodate both leagues at the same time while Disney limits regular guests in the next few months during their phased reopening. And the NBA and MLS would not be playing or practicing in the same space.

i dont know the area but twitter talk say that the staff is what the concern is, since they still want to social distance having full use of hotel capacity is not ideal. it will be what close to 1000 people for both leagues to be in at the same time? especially if the staff to take in the guests is limited to begin with.

edit: plus when they not training/playing i dont think they will all be in the room all day.

Disney World has almost 36,000 guest rooms, and that doesn't count offsite hotels not owned by Disney. (There are some non-Disney hotels on this list but they are onsite and have a special relationship with Disney).

Disney World is reopening in July with the consensus they will be at 20-40% of capacity. Shanghai Disney was the first Disney Park to open worldwide and they opened at 30%. Some of WDW's guests will be local or staying at offsite hotels. Disney can handle their regular limited guests plus the NBA and MLS easily.
