CFG and beckham got a massive free pass with their bids. Both stadium situations are nowhere near resolved and quite frankly its a bit of a joke.
In fairness, NYC was going to deliver for CFG until BdB ripped up Bloomberg’s plan for the stadium. The decision to award CFG/NYCFC predated the BdB move.

And Miami was unique in its own right, knowing that Beckham's contractual language likely influenced their bid far more than the league's expansion process. Nobody else in recent years was able to take advantage of leverage they had a decade earlier when the league was in an entirely different position.
Miami's fate was sealed in a time when RSL and Chivas came in. Both were disasters for the league.

As things are going, MLS Ft Lauderdale is gonna be a massive destination for players :)

RSL is a disaster? They're aren't headliners, but their attendance is fine and they have a great academy and infrastructure. Far from a disaster.

The original investor was poorly capitalized and ill-prepared to run the organization and it nearly collapsed a couple years in. It has been salvaged, but the club as it was founded wouldn't even get a sniff at the league now. T

The league has been bit multiple times by under-capitilized investors which explains the emphasis on very deep pockets behind expansion groups.

It was Dave Checketts. Claim to fame being the GM/CEO/head of multiple sports teams and current owner of Legends (we have him to hate). That guy always seemed to be the brains behind bringing money together yet he was the one with the shallow pockets - but at RSL, he was the majority owner and took the cheap way out, always. Best thing for that club was him selling to his stake to RSL’s minority owner.

Garber has said that they are in talks with 3 markets at the moment. Las Vegas, Phoenix and Charlotte.

Charlotte are the front runners for spot 30, which could be announced in the next few months

i love that the league is growing... but at 30, i really hope they decide to just STOP for at least 5 years and let things settle.

It’s probably part of the plan to get all possible markets on board before the next TV deal. The current one is peanuts, something like $90m. The next is expected to be $1B+.

I don’t want to see the talent diluted, but to secure a rights deal like that would help bolster additional talent from outside the US. It’s one step back for 3-4 forward.

Achieve 30 by 2022 for the next TV deal and then sell two more spots at a big markup for the 2026 World Cup hype.

Don’t know if this belongs here or in the mls off season thread now that their officially a team . My dad texted me a picture from the Florida paper of an article . Inter Miami are hitting more stadium snags and might be stuck in Fort Lauderdale linger than expected . Not sure if that’s more similar to our situation or redbull since they’ll actually have a non baseball venue just not on Their actual named city .

I always figured Lauderdale was going to be our YS disaster..... and I guarantee the ownership knew it too since they committed to rebuilding Lockhart instead of using it as-is. Why sink so much money into a temp venue????

i recall listening to a miami soccer podcast couple months ago( magic soccer city ? something like that) and they said that their "source" said that it was very real possibility that Ft Lauderdale may end up being permanent, killing the whole miami city vibe and effectively making it miami fusion 2.0. starting to feel like a bait and switch here because those "enhancements" to lockhart dont seem to be just for an academy team.
