According to this article in The Athletic, four different national teams could be in for Gio's international services: https://theathletic.com/1628620/2020/02/24/ornstein-reyna-giovanni-usa-guendouzi-arteta-var/?source=dailyemail

Amid his emergence as one of the most exciting prospects in world football, it has not gone unnoticed that Giovanni Reyna could choose to represent England at international level.
The Athletic has learnt of the steps being taken by the English Football Association to potentially bring him under their flag in the future.. He has turned out for USA in junior age groups — ironically netting the winner against England in the prestigious Torneo delle Nazioni final two years ago — and is also eligible to wear the colours of Portugal and Argentina via grandparents, which may produce a four-way tussle for his services.
Reyna... is now on a priority list of around 25 players the [English] FA is paying particular attention to. That involves a more advanced screening process thought to have seen him scouted in person on about 15 occasions and by video in the region of 30 times.

He will play for USA. Gregg and Claudio are best friends. That’s clickbait.
speculation will always be around until he is cap tied. i dont think your dad being best buddies with someone guarantees anything though.

The player will cap tie himself to the US. Good on the FA for doing their due diligence. But it’s not happening

i dont think england really had a chance, their own passport rules are complex and i think difficult to obtain one with no british ties. if anything portugal has better shot since passport is there already, im sure aregentina wanted him too but their FA is a mess so i dont see anything happening there.

IF this were to happen and I don't think it will ...well.. His dad having once been known as Captain America, this would be a bigger betrayal than Gio Rossi.

Nice article in the Athletic about Gio Reyna. Long and detailed about his rise at Dortmund and his upbringing in NYC. It includes a good discussion of his time in the academy and his friendship with Scally. The article also reveals that Reyna was first brought in to train with the first team at the end of the 2017 season.

There are also several paragraphs about Gio's decision to sign with Dortmund and not NYCFC. He seems to have been very tempted by staying home, but in the end the lure of Europe and Dortmund's plan for him and its experience with Pulisic took him overseas. The article reveals that some in MLS were unhappy with the result, and there were rumors that Claudio's separation from NYC had something to do with that decision. Claudio rejects that saying that he was up front with NYC the entire time and that the decision was left to Gio.

Got a run out today. Looked OK, not great. Ball didn't find him much. They miss all of Haaland's hold up and runs when he is out. Drew a free kick though

Overall, he looked good, although was a bit passive at times when he had the ball on the right wing. That may have been strategy to not send in crosses.

It was interesting to see him isolated with Davies so many times.

And a pretty assist on their first goal.

Think it's pretty obvious that Gio was never going to be an MLS player, that going to one of the biggest leagues in the world was the right move for his development, and that any criticism of Claudio for how that went down is misplaced. Hopefully it's not the reason for his departure from the club. If it was, that's a needlessly terrible decision.

Sure, but training compensation would have been nice. Maybe $250K in GAM or something?
