MLS Week 30 - 2018

Why would Austin be the swing? They would surely be in the west, Houston, KC, and Minnesota are all more eastern than Austin though.

A quick google search before found me that Cincinnati joins 2019, nashville and miami join 2020.
So next season, if columbus move to Austin, then COL(east) will become Austin(west)
Austin is the swing because why make one of the other teams switch conferences twice in 2 years? Just let Austin stay in the East and switch once.
Also, in MLS, COL is Colorado. Columbus is CLB.

I guess that makes sense, but it would be super weird for a more western team to be in the East.
Also, I always forget the COL vs CLB distinction, my bad lol.

sooooo San Jose just took the lead and are looking the better side in the first 20 minutes.
Wow.

ETA-
I write that and then almost immediately ATL shows up. Still haven't scored, but now playing well again.

ETA yet again:
Okay, 3-1 SJ. Insane!

Holy. Shit. I have never seen this before.

Everyone is probably asleep, so here’s the rundown. Quakes beating up Atlanta 3-1. Great ball to Wondolowski and he makes it 4-1. The ref runs over to the sideline and there is a VAR review. No one knows why. Wondo was clearly onside.

The ref calls off Wondos goal, picks up the ball, runs it to the other side of the field and gives Atlanta a penalty. Turns out there was a handball TWO MINUTES between the time of the handball and VAR review.

Martinez scores the pen and then Atlanta scores AGAIN and ties it 3-3.

This is the most MLS shit I have ever seen. Ever.

Happy to have shared this batshit moment with you haha

Red Bull fans are going to shit when they wake up and see this.
I almost went to bed at 3-1 thinking "okay it's over, nice."
I can't imagine the entire RB population did the same and will wake up to horror. lol
Luckily for us we gave up on the supporter shield and CCL lead long ago, so it's not such a saddening result, just one of those conspiracy-feeding results.

Furthermore, playoff scenarios this week:

Wasn’t the goal reversal PK award the correct call under the rules? Bonkers, but correct, right? Watching on a phone on the train, but looked like a clear PK.

Why did you highlight Seattle v LA and Portland v Minnesota, phili loss at SKC etc? Are those just the remaining possible results?

Yes. It looked like a clear handball with the defender's arm raised. Also, the handball was 30-35 seconds before the goal, not two minutes. I watched video. Still, a pretty preposterous situation, but perfectly in line with VAR rules as currently set forth. They cannot stop play. They will always be able to review a possible PK at the next natural stoppage of play. In this case, that was a goal scored by the other team. Anyone who supports VAR has to accept this. They might change the rule, but I'm not sure there are great options:
  • add a time limit -- as I said, this was about 30 seconds
  • allow the officials to stop ongoing play
  • add a special rule that says if the next stoppage is a goal, then no review
You can easily imagine situations where people scream bloody murder when those rules apply
"so a clear PK can't get reviewed because open play goes on too long?"
"the refs stopped play and killed our momentum for a VAR review that didn't even change anything"
"so you can commit a PK foul, then get a double bonus by scoring first and avoid review; that's just great"

The next ridiculous iteration of this will be that a team should be awarded a PK but are not, and the next stoppage is when that same team scores a goal. VAR will wipe out the goal they scored, and they miss the PK.

How bout we just eliminate VAR. the correct call percentages are not improving. And it’s just creating chaos. Soccer chaos.

The referee really needs to mic’d up to explain what is going on...

1) Is the handball being reviewed as a penalty decision?
2) Is the handball being reviewed as a foul in the attack phase of play?

Watched MLS Soccer.com’s video on it. Atlanta regained control after the handball incident and continued attacking for 20 seconds. Then San Jose gained possession and scored. The penalty was called as the goal was the next stoppage in play, like a throw in, corner kick, free kick. All plays except violent conduct can be looked back until the resumption of the next stoppage of play. If Atlanta were to have kicked off after that San Jose goal, the penalty could not be further reviewed. But it was reviewed at that stoppage. And led to the correct, although there are no clear and obvious angles on the broadcast, decision.
