2015 Mls Season Attendance Thread

There are basically a couple of negative trends affecting MLS attendance. One is some underperforming clubs like Columbus, Chicago and New England. The other is some well performing clubs have venues that are too small and keeping their attendance artificially low. I am thinking of you, Portland, among others.

I don't know if this is still on the cards. A 10,000 capacity standing terrace behind one goal would create an atmosphere to rival the old Spion Kop at Anfield.

MLS Timbers Owner Merritt Paulson said he is planning to expand the 22,000-seat Jeld-Wen Field by several thousand seats by "putting terracing in at the supporters' section." Paulson, appearing on ESPN Radio 103.3 Dallas' "Soccer Today," said, "Terracing ends up adding capacity for the supporters, and that’s a benefit there.” There has been talk about the Timbers switching their current artificial turf surface to natural grass, and Paulson said, “We’ve got an unusual setup with this stadium where it’s both a sunken bowl and with limited light. If we add artificial lights and we had a lot less events here -- and maybe in a world where we didn’t have to host college football -- could we put in natural grass? ... It’s probably 50-50 at best and I don’t want to get people too excited yet." He acknowledged there is a "huge stigma still with artificial (turf) and the technology is getting so much better." Paulson: "We’ve embraced that and done some unique things that has in fact made our surface better. I would like grass, I won’t lie about that and we’ve got the best grass training field in the whole state that our players practice and train on every day” (“Soccer Today,” ESPN Radio 103.3 Dallas, 9/22). NBCSPORTS.com's Steve Davis noted considering the Timbers' "brand of faux field is the best in MLS, and even understanding that chances of real grass bliss beneath the feet are no better than 50-50, that's still something to sit up and take notice of" (NBCSPORTS.com, 9/25).

Toronto FC BMO Field is getting expanded, I do believe SKC stadium is awesome and perfect for that area. Agreed that Portland should expand, also Revs fans stink and Rapids fans are just as bad. I expect DC United fans to pack out there new Stadium when it's done RFK stadium isn't for football. Even if you give the Revs a new stadium I really can't see them filling it up. San Jose stadium is perfect they barely fill it up. Can't complain who would have thought the league attendance would be as good as it times have changed for the better.

If the revs built a stadium on a T stop in boston it would do well. Boston is a great market with plenty of millenials etc. It would need a total revamp though. Dc united should do much better with a new stadium as well.

Man. This week is going to be pretty bad. I've tuned in to most of the games today and saw a LOT of empty seats. DC, Columbus, Dallas and Colorado look really poor. To be fair, weather in the last three looks pretty bad. They ended the first half in Dallas three minutes early because of lightning. Not sure what DC's excuse was...

After 6 weeks in Chinese Super League the average attendance is 23.043 !!!!
So basically what you are saying is that a country with a population about 4 times that of the US is averaging about what the MLS is.........

- Pretty average week for attendance. Expected though when columbus/dallas/colorado/dc are hosting games.

- Im hoping DC will improve once the stadium gets built etc, Columbus though i think wont improve anymore.

- Dallas with the way they are playing should really be selling out games. The only thing i can think is the stadium location holding them back.

- Colorado are a mess. If there was one reason id support pro/rel it would be teams run like this would be playing Division 2 where they belong.

- If Toronto FC keep losing games, the 30,000 seater stadium expansion will have a lot of empty seats.

Thankfully next week Orlando City and above all Seattle Sounders ( versus Portland.... ) will play at home........

I would hope that attendance would pick up soon. It has been on a rather gradual decline since the opening weekend of the season...
Bad weather all over the place! Snow, cold now severe thunderstorms. It'll tick up for the summer.
