2015 Mls Season Attendance Thread

I feel as though these midweek games are throwing a monkey wrench into the average attendance every week. Why does the league like having this constantly low outlier bring down the total attendance numbers?

They are, but i guess they are a necessary to squeeze the season in.

3 poorly attended, uninspiring midweek games and the top 3 in attendance all away. I think the average for the weekend was 19010. Over the weekend 6/10 teams beat last season's average.

Only to be 100% accurate, the Portland attendance was 20,144 and not 20,114 ( MLS error ) ;).

Couple of notes -

- DC united cant get a new stadium soon enough. A team thats winning its conference shouldn't be coming dead last on the attendance list. Im hoping with the new stadium agreement today they will go past 20,000 a season.

- Any team averaging over 20,000 is doing well, although LA should really be doing better. Im guessing once Gerrard arrives it will give the team a boost.

- Anything less than 15,000 is poor in todays era.

- NYRB are like LA. Good but should be better.

- Even with a rebrand Columbus are still struggling. Unfortunately they might be seeing a relocation one day.

- Philly/NE/CF/CR/FCD/CCSC - are all in crappy stadium situations. NE has a chance to turn it around with a new stadium in downtown boston. The others are going to have to wait for awhile.

Seattle - 40,126

Orlando - 36,587

Toronto FC - 23,835

NYCFC - 23,539
Just looking at the top 4. This also shows just how incredibly far ahead Seattle is. Makes me imagine what this league could look like in 10 years if other teams could crack that code.

I believe those NYCFC #'s are incorrect. Looks like you divided by 1 extra home match.........we only played 7.

New England, SKC, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle, Chicago and Houston.

5 of the bottom 7 are original MLS teams with another, Chicago being added in 1998.

2015 Averages
10 expansion teams since 2006* - 24,036
10 surviving pre-2006 teams 17,023.
Failed teams** 9,573 in their last seasons.

5 of the 6 teams to have double digit sellouts last season have joined MLS since 2004.

MLS have got their expansion strategy right and the league will go from strength to strength.

*Includes Houston (relocation of the Clash)
**Excludes Clash

I had been thinking of this and feel a bit for the original teams. Maybe its just bad timing and a general apathy to the team and the sport when they first started, plus the fact that these teams play in less than suitable stadiums doesnt help either.

Expansion teams today get to have a whole new generation of fans at their disposal.

Nothing stopping original teams from rebranding or new marketing strategies to bring in new fans. Of course there is no time like the beginning to light a spark in your marketplace. But if you already have a base of thousands of fans you've got to be able to work with them to build excitement. I wonder how much of this is about the management of the original teams.
