Its such a badly constructed roster isn't it? The addition of Pirlo was so unnecessary, and puts a wrench in everything. He has to be central, Mix has to be central and Lamps has to be central. Poku should really be central too. I don't know what i would do. Maybe 4-3-3? Pirlo (or lampard) looking more and more like a mistake to get. I just don't see where he fits.
I don't know much about the market for fast wide players but it doesn't seem too supply-constrained. Apparently there's enough that we passed on Grella :S

I guess the point I'm making is that it's difficult to find somebody of Pirlo's ilk and ability, and maybe less difficult to find the pieces we need around him.

I think its also important to note that Lampard was playing as a #10 for the first time rather than a #8. He has the game of a box to box midfielder without the legs but the #10 role I think is the only position that he can play. I think the more practical solution is to face the fact that Lamps is only a 55-60 minute player and sub Poku on for the last half hour and start him during cup games.

A 4-3-3 would be interesting. We played one game in an interesting 4-3-3 formation. Villa play LW with no defensive responsibility and Mix played RW that was more of a RM.

Villa-------Poku-------------------
------------Lamps-------RW/RM
-----------Mix-Pirlo---------------
???------CB----CB-----AI/Allen

LB would not have forward responsibilities. Put Mix on the left side for defensive help. AI or Allen would be able to go up the right flank because of the RW/RM. Not in love with this though. I don't know if this is better than the 4-2-3-1. I think we might just have to live with Villa as the sole striker.
That game with the 4-3-3 was the most dynamic attacking performance the team had all season. Yes, there were times the back 4 were left completely to fend for themselves with Mena (if I remember correctly) playing some lights-out 1v1 defending. Villa had the support he desperately desired, Mullins was active & involved, and the team just seemed to buy in to it. Of course, even with the great ball movement on offense, with what seemed to be a breakthrough tactically, the next game we dropped the formation. The 4-3-3 isn't perfect, but it may be as close as we'll get with the hodge-podge of core players we have assembled.

Hmm, I remember us trying 4-3-3. Do you remember who we played / how we fared? I remember thinking that it didn't quite work and that Villa kept picking up the ball too far away from goal. That said, IIRC, we tried it for one game, maybe even one half of a game, then junked it, so we may have built up some chemistry if we stuck it out for a few games.

This was the game: http://www.whoscored.com/Matches/91...ue-Soccer-2015-New-York-City-FC-Columbus-Crew

IIRC it was pretty effective in the first half but we switched formations after we subbed Lampard out for Poku. We were tied at half but actually had alot of decent shot attempts in the first.
I'll add that once Mullins was subbed out for TMac, the shape completed fell apart. Mullins was the true link to make the offense work.

This was also the game that CBus scored early off a corner with nobody marking Higuin and Pirlo switching over late to try and pick him up. From then on, NYCFC was the stronger team until the subs took place, NYCFC's form fell apart and Meram scored after losing Iriola (shocking).

What would happen if we ...

Villa---Mullins---Lamps
Mix----Pirlo-------Poku
??---Mena--??--Allen/AI

Again not ideal placement for mix or Poku but everyone is on the field.

The right side of the lineup would get torched, especially if Iriola was playing instead of Allen.

Then that would suggest a need for Allen to play and that mystery CB to be a strong addition. But this gets everyone on the field.

Please. Can't I just have everyone on the field?

Allen isn't a sexy player but he's cheap, very serviceable, and will leave everything on the field. I'd rather take Iriola's cap hit (if possible with a transfer) and put it towards a CB. Allen's backup can be found either in the draft, USL, or Conner Brandt.

------------------------Mullins---------
-----------Villa--------------------------
------TMac------Mix------Poku-------
------------Pirlo------Jacobson--------
--Allen---------Mena----Iraola--------
-----------Saunders/Eirik--------------

3-5-2

Lampard subbed on at the 65'
Shelton subbed on at the 80'

Had 12 men in the lineup. I'd take goals over defense.

I also did not like Jacobson moving up as much as he did.

Can we buy a 12th man with allocation money? It would solve alot of our problems. :D

Which game was that? I want to go watch the replay.

Not sure, but Pablo just posted about next year. Could be that they're not entirely done with the roster eval yet. But does that sound like he won't be back or he will?

"It has been a fantastic feeling playing for #nycfc, it was a shame to can not say goodbye playing in front of our fans. Thanks!! next season, next challenges.... "

If he leaves that might make it possible to make some of the line-up changes we need. That being said would be a shame to see him go.

He was so cheap at 60k, but I think we can grab a 20 year old that can really only run for the same amount. Young Agudelo was making less than that for NJ.

Could RJ ever work at CDM, or to the right of Pirlo?
I'd say no. Allen is great at man-marking and he has some serious speed (which would be wasted in the middle as a defense-first cog), but I'm not sure he has the tactical awareness to play zone in the middle and snuff out attacks. Then again, I've never seen him placed in that situation so there's a chance he could be a total savant.
