We signed Mena halfway thru the season so did we only pay him half of what his full salary would be? We paid him $211k, so would his full season salary be ~$400k? Because Transfermarkt has him listed somewhere in that range and that's a huge hit on our cap for someone that is a risk and not a proven talent at CB

Your hero played him there and I'd get rid of Wingert because he's done.
Pretty sure that Wingert did not play CB after Mena signed with the team. But it looks like you want to argue with emotion rather than facts.
Mena actually replaced Wingert at CB in his first game with the team

Sorry. Disclaimer being roster related. This makes more sense than Grabavoy to me even. In a half season, we learned nothing about him. Can't take that cap hit on someone that could be actually worse than Grabavoy.
We learned "nothing" about him because Kreis was constantly shifting the lineups. It'd be hard for any new CB to look good next to a revolving door of teammates. However against Columbus, I saw some damn fine man-marking against the leading scorer in MLS.
Demichelis stated he would like to move to mls, barely played for MCFC this season as being phased out so could leave in January rather than when his contract expires in the summer, depends if he is prepared to take a wage cut - is there anything stopping MCFC giving him a big bonus before he leaves and then have him on lower wages at NYCFC? would be great to partner mena/facey as they are both athletic but short whilst Demichelis reads the game very well and is tall, would help to organise the rest of the defence also. Ambrose on loan from MCFC would be good as they will be looking to loan him out soon, he's quick which is what we are lacking and can play any position across the front 3. Would need to find a good left back also

Yeah, but as others have said, how do you fit him under the salary cap? Also, MCFC wouldn't let him go unless they had a new fourth-choice CB lined up, and they're more likely to wait for summer for that than rush a solution in January just to let NYCFC fill their defensive positions.
While this is true, the thing against Mena is the fact that he takes up an international roster spot. Especially since we don't have a full academy and homegrown players, you can't under perform and take up one of those spots when we could possible get a fourth EDS loan or another foreign player.
Talking about our current international spot situation:
Each MLS club gets 8
Traded DC United for 15, 16 spots in exchange for not taking players in the expansion draft.
Traded LA Galaxy for second half of 15, entire 16 in exchange for allocation money in order to sign Mena.
For 2016 we have a total of 10 spots
Current players seen training (5)
Iraola
Johansen (loaned away in 2015)
Lampard
Pirlo
Villa
Mena (?)
Terminated and/or not with the club:
Pablo Alverez (recently released)
Javier Calle (loan not renewed)
Adam Nemec (Term Contract Aug 31)

So if Mena leaves we would have 5 spots available. If Facey comes back which most of us expect to happen that leaves 4. I would imagine 1 or 2 EDS players coming. Then we would still have 2 spots available to sign some international players in the January window. We have a lot of flexibility going into 2016. We also have some cap space as well. I know people don't think we do but we've cut a TON of salary from this roster and we get extra allocation money for being shitty and not making the playoffs.
Unless they have someone waiting in the wings at the youth level like they did with Pozo last year.
That being said - he needs to take a massive pay cut for it to work here. I honestly think there is a better chance he joins in January of 2017 than this summer. He could slot into a CDM or CB position upon Lampard stepping away. That being said, I would be concerned that he is not quick enough to play here.
Here's another thought - NONE of us know how the Iraola signing went down. Whatever his wages really are, he's not here on a DP contract.

No one else in MLS could have made that move - they took the starting RB and Captain from a mid-table La Liga club. It would be like a player from Liverpool joining up.

Obviously with the B.S. MLS secrecy we dont know for sure what our cap looks like but player salary are reported by the Player's Union which doesn't take allocation money into account. Iraola made 200k for half a year so he probably is going to make 400k next season.

Whoa ?!?! You just compared a mid-table La Liga team to Liverpool...... that should rile some Liverpool fans up since in La Liga there are 3, maybe 4 good teams and then a cliff-face drop to the others. The EPL has about 7-8 solid teams, and while Liverpool is having an off year, they're easily in the top rung of 5. Bilbao only got competitive last year, and Iraola being expendable may be why - before that, they were mid table at best. I'd venture that getting Iraola is the same as poaching the captain from maybe Sunderland or Astin Villa, which on paper sounds great, but in actuality it may be less than expected.
Daniel Agger would be a solid signing!
