This is exactly what I am asking for. Call it a narrow 4-4-2 but more like a 4-3-3. Fullbacks and Wingers need to provide width.

A knee or achilles injury could easily take more than 1 year to rehab. Depending on the injury, it could also end your career.

Isn't Cole the guy who made that crack a year or two ago about not coming to MLS, because he's not ready to retire (or some similar half assed remark?).

If so, fuck him.

If not, then kindly disregard the above remark.......

Not ready "to relax on a beach"

yeah hope he recovers. what kind of injury would take more than 1 year to rehab? that must be some serious collisions. Soccer is actually one of the most injury prone sports. I think it should be mandatory to wear some additional protective gear.

I think it was microfracture surgery or some such thing. It's in the George John thread. It's one of those things they try only as a last resort because a full recovery is uncertain.

Meh. I hope we don't blow our wad on another Iraola. Cole would be a free transfer in January, but won't be on cheap wages, that's for sure.
He'd have to take a MASSIVE pay cut. Given his lack of appearances he might have to.

I wouldn't mind rostering him for an Iraola type of contract if, and it's a huge if, Veiria can manage him and his seemingly poor attitude towards MLS.

Let's say he takes a salary similar to Iraola (which is the only way we can sign him), you have to ask yourself if there is a better option available.

How many LBs are there in the world that are a) available on a free transfer b) better than Ashley Cole and c) make $250k a year?

Don't dismiss the move because you don't like him, his attitude or his wages. You need to consider it in the context of an MLS roster and player availability. These signings don't happen in a vacuum.

I agree you have to consider it if he would take the pay cut. But how many 33+ year old players do we want to build our team around? It just seems like we are asking for injury issues at some point.

Ca$hley is going to be 35 on the 20th. I'd like us to look somewhere else.

I would to. But the question is this - go find me a better LB on a free transfer that makes only $250k. There's probably someone out there but maybe there isn't. You probably can't trade for one and we can't pay a transfer fee for one.

These things don't happen in vacuums with the MLS Salary Cap rules. Ashley Cole may actually be the best value out there for a LB right now. Certainly better than Wingert who made $220k last year.

With Lamps, Mix and Pirlo, isn't it possible that PV leaves Poku on the bench? Can we handle this if it happens? Or is there no way PV ignores Poku?

Poku would force a move. I'm sure he's already had this discussion with someone.

Poku better start or so help me god PV will not hear the end of it as I scream at him when he walks up and down the tunnel. This is why you get seats at the tunnel to yell your displeasure at people.

I hear you and agree he should be starting on this team. I'm just saying, you know Lamps and Pirlo are locks, and probably Mix too, even in PV's mind. That only leaves 1 or 2 at best midfield roles for Poku. If PV signs just one buddy who's awesome from Europe, Poku is on the outside looking in.

I guess I'm just playing devils advocate. It's possible.

We don't know what Poku's best position is. Which means he could be a Striker for PV.
Sure anything is possible but he hasn't played thus far in his pro career (I'm not counting NPSL). It seems unlikely.

However the scenario that I have described to you seems very plausible.

He played multiple times this year as a Striker, Secondary Striker or Winger.

Maybe on the wing, but Kreis never put him out there as a striker. I think a flat out striker isn't the best for him. I'm fairly confident PV will also deploy him in at least a AM role if not a CM role.
